Rebecca
Can you recommend resources for teaching creative writing at the high school level? Also, if you have taught a co-op class for high school creative writing- what did you use? Thank you! mom@shiloh
The Power in Your Hands by Sharon Watson. I taught both of her writing courses (fiction and non-fiction) at our high school co-op. I LOVE her curriculum and received many positive comments from both students and parents. The author is very clear in her instructions. Assignments are challenging, but not overwhelming. The best review came from my senior ds, who is dyslexic and despised writing. In regards to the non-fiction course, he said, "I feel prepared for college writing assignments now." I agree with him. He will never be the world's best writer, but this curriculum guided him through the process systematically and gently until now he feels confident. Rebecca
Thank you! She has a fiction course that I put in my Rainbow Cart. :) I have heard of The Power in Your Hands but have never used it.
Lori D.
Not a full semester or full year class on creative writing, BUT... two years ago, I had both my middle school and high school students choose to either do a research paper or creative writing (a short story or a chapter from a longer work) for the longer writing project that we took about 8-9 weeks on. I skimmed and used ideas from NaNoWriMo's Young Writer's materials, and a few ideas from the online sample pages I could see from Lee Roddy's program. (Since this was just part of one semester, I didn't want to have to purchase anything ;) .) Here are programs and resources that I saw that might be helpful: - The Creative Writer, level 4 (Boris Fishman) -- levels 1-3 are middle school; this is from WTM publishers - Writing Fiction in High School (Sharon Watson) -- her programs of Jump In (gr. 6-9) and Power in Your Hands (gr. 9-12) are NON-fiction/essay writing - How to Write a Story (Lee Roddy) -- high school/adult - Hewitt Homeschooling: Creative Writing syllabus (Elizabeth Kalmuth) -- high school - One Year Adventure Novel (high school) -- he also authored the middle school program Cover Story - NaNoWriMo: Prep Library Articles (scroll down on this page) - articles on specific aspects of writing Novelist Workbook -- can download the pdf of the elementary, middle school, or high school level - From Fact to Fiction (Ware & Bailey) -- free online vintage book (or purchase a reprint at Amazon); set up as a discussion between teacher and student Edited May 24, 2017 by Lori D.
