Chicago parking

I want to take my dc and mother to the Art Institute tomorrow. I'm planning to get there at 10-10:30, to be there when they open. Will I be able to park in one of the underground garages in the park? This is what I've always done in the past. The Art Institute's website says to arrange parking ahead of time with someone/something called ParkingPanda.

If you page down further on the website, it talks about the parking garages nearby.

Nearby Public Garages

These garages are located underground below the parks adjacent to the museum. Please call (312) 616-0600 for lot and rate information. Drop-offs are permitted at the Millennium Park entrance. A traffic pull out is available from the eastbound lanes of Monroe Street.

  • East Monroe Street and Millennium Park garages
(entrance at Columbus Drive and Monroe Street)
  • Grant Park south garage
(entrance at Michigan Avenue between Van Buren and Adams streets)
  • Grant Park north garage
(entrance at Michigan Avenue between Madison and Randolph streets)

We've always parked in one of the garages, usually the East Monroe Street garage.  From what I remember, it is easy to confuse it with the Millennium Park garage since they share an entrance, but the Millennium Park garage is more expensive.   I don't know anything about ParkingPanda ... that is new and not a widely used service that I know of.

Thank you. Heading into unfamiliar territory without another reliable decision maker always makes me super anxious. I'm feeling calm(er) and capable now. I would not have been the early hominid who discovered the new world!

Just a thought--take the train downtown and a cab from the train station?

I love that thought. If only this country could figure out rational mass transit. I would go all the time if it meant I could spend two hours sitting passively on the train getting my own thing done and letting someone else watch out for traffic and figure out the route. When I've investigated in the past the times were bad and most of the trip was Amtrak operated by Greyhound. Eh. Every year I get my hopes up, and then they spend millions widening another stretch of interstate.

Thanks, though. Avoiding the stress of driving would actually be worth quite a bit to me. I'll look at it for the next trip.

Parking Panda is fine, legit, have used it before. We've used Spot Hero a couple times in Chicago quite successfully. Sometimes the same parking spot will be WAY less if you prepay with Spot Hero. We just used it for a lot that was like $75 a day list price on the hotel site and we got it for way less on Spot Hero. So if the Art Institute is saying to use Parking Panda, definitely download the app and try. You can even do it on the way there. :)

So yes, using an app is the normal way to park now. Definitely try it. :)
