Tap
For dd18s freiends, I am putting together graduation presents. DD and her friends love to go hiking and spending time outdoors so I am using that as a theme. I would love to add a 3rd item to their present that goes with the theme. We are in the PNW if that matters (Portland, Ore area). They are all girls except one guy. So far, I have Lightweight hiking backpack in bright colors Travel guide to hiking/day trips in our area ?? (To round out the package, I plan to put in a few hiking snacks). I would like to keep the 3rd item under $15. They each already have a Hydroflask so water bottle is out. Compass would be cute with the theme, but not really useful. I have thought about a survival knife, but which one? Maybe a tiny 1st aid kit, with a cutsie tie-in message about the boo-boos of life. Cute hiking/themed t-shirt? nevergiveup
Deep Woods Off. Tick populations are up 500% here (or so it seems).
Rachel
Water filter came to mind first too. The Sawyer Mini runs about $20 but I have seen them cheaper.

Tap
These patches are really cute and fun: http://www.kimberlin.co/patches/ I love those! It could really help to personalize the gifts. I will get dd to help find some that match each person. I still want another gift, but these will be a great accessory!

Seasider
Check Redbubble.com for stickers of favorite hiking spots. They are very popular for sticking on water bottles, car windows/bumpers and other gear. Cheap, too!

J-rap
Actually, I think a little compass would be useful! I've even used one traveling in a city before, when I'm trying to get my bearings. You can get one on a little carabiner that they can attach to their backpack. You can also get little thermometers that attach to a carabiner which I find handy. They have all used them many times!
Carol in Cal.
One of those backpacking rain ponchos in a little pouch would be great.
Rachel
If it rains a lot or they cross a lot of streams, dry bags are great. I bought a set of 3 at Walmart but this is similar: https://m.dickssportinggoods.com/p/outdoor-products-ultimate-dry-sack-3-pack-16opru3pkltmtdryspas/16opru3pkltmtdryspas?camp=CSE:DSG_pg17341_ecom_PLA_452&gclid=CjwKEAjwu4_JBRDpgs2RwsCbt1MSJABOY8anZe-VgjrYFqyZx-A5-WH14hPrwQdxtrgSso2W5zrimBoCkZvw_wcB They are so handy for keeping things sorted in my pack. I use one for clothes, one for food, and one for random small items.
