dirty ethel rackham
I went through my summer clothes and found that not much fit. Boo Hoo. I am leaving in 5 days for a hiking/rock climbing trip and it will be hot and humid. I need some shorts that will be comfortable for hiking in hot weather and won't feel terrible under a climbing harness and that comes in larger sizes. I'm probably a 14 right now. I don't want to spend a lot of money because I don't want to be this size (I am sick over this ... depression, huge amounts of stress causing that depression, oh, and menopause garbage thrown in there.) I'm sure my 15 hot flashes a day will feel really great in the weather we are heading into.
TrixieB
If you have any thrift stores nearby, you might get lucky and find a decent pair of hiking shorts. Look on the athletic wear shorts rack as well as the regular shorts rack.

mmasc
Academy.com Magellan Outdoors Women's Fish Gear Bermuda Shorts They aren't actually 'hiking' shorts, but are advertised as fishing shorts. Whatever they are, I love them! I can only buy them online, but shipping was super fast. 3 days I think? Very thin and lightweight, dry fast, a couple of pockets. ETA: Oh, and you can order a couple of pairs to check sizing/ to get free shipping, and then free returns! creekland
I often like Columbia's hiking shorts - esp those that come with closed pockets - a MUST for me. They're usually found in outdoor stores like Gander Mountain, etc. We also have a Columbia Outlet near us.
Minerva
I bought a pair of Outdoor Research shorts at the thrift store last summer and LOVE them. They are light, sturdy, comfortable. I have looked on their website and they are expensive, but I might actually buy a second pair because they have a million hours on them and still look and feel good. It is hot and humid where I live and I wear them hiking all the time. I hope your trip is relaxing.
whitestavern
If you have a Sierra Trading Post nearby that's a good option.
prairiewindmomma
Columbia---they wick well, dry quickly, wear well, aren't "hot" to wear, and protect against chafing. If you are near an outlet, you can pick up a pair for <$30. I've worn my current pairs about 70 times each, and the only wear I see is a bit of pilling on the inner thigh.
alisoncooks
I just got back from Disney and I packed 2 pairs of Columbia's Anytime Long Shorts (and a pair of the capris). They are SO SO SO comfy. Really. Very thin and stretchy, almost as stretchy as yoga pants. Very forgiving and flattering, though. I found they ran a bit roomy (I wear an 18, and found that the 16 fit snug but stretched out to comfy after a few hours). https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Womens-Anytime-Outdoor-Short/dp/B008MW3EXS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495459907&sr=8-1&keywords=columbia+anytime+shorts https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Womens-Anytime-Outdoor-Capri/dp/B00BVGC10E/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1495459907&sr=8-5&keywords=columbia+anytime+shorts I didn't like spending the $$ on these shorts (b/c this isn't my "typical" size) but I got 2 pairs used on ebay and bought one pair new. But they are worth the money -- most comfortable shorts ever. And long enough they don't ride up. dirty ethel rackham
If you have a Sierra Trading Post nearby that's a good option. We have one opening soon, but it won't be ready before this weekend. I looked online. They had some great shorts but none with in my size that I wouldn't cry about the price. dirty ethel rackham
Thanks for all the suggestions. I did order a couple of pairs onkine, but didn't realize u til later that I didn't check the shipping and they will arrive after we leave. Grrrr. So, I have to get in my car and try things on. On a good note, I did find out that there are some outdoor outfitters at the upscale outlet mall about 30 minutes away. They have Columbia, arc'teryx, Merrell, Eddie bauer, and a few others. Off to face the humiliation of the dressing room. Trying hard not to eat another delicious blueberry muffin that dd made. We ran out of milk so she substituted yogurt, but we didn't adjust the leavening correctly. They look like top hats. ;-D. But they taste soo gooood. I'm getting them all day and night. Sleep is difficult ... I'm waking 5-6 times a night that I am aware of. Exercise is hard because when they come on, it feels like I'm trying to exercise in 100 degree weather. (Farenheit, that is.) dirty ethel rackham
rei is having their anniversary sale right now. all rei sahara are 50% off. Ooh. I have a coupon for REI as well. I didn't see much on their website, but if I strike out at the outlet mall, I'll head there (it is about 30 minutes in the opposite direction.) Do you have a Dick's near you? Ours has a section of hiking clothing. We do have a Dick's, but it really does not have much of a selection for hiking. As far as clothing is concerned, it is more traditional sports and "fitness" wear for running, yoga, and the like.
dirty ethel rackham
SUCCESS!! I finally was able to squeeze in a trip to the outlet mall and was able to take advantage of the pre-memorial day sales. I scored a pair of convertable pants at Columbia and 2 pairs of shorts at Eddie Bauerm (these were styles I had seen online and they were half-price!). I need to clean house, do laundry, and pack tomorrow. And figure out how to make my "curly bob" hairstyle into stylish outdoor-activities-tolerant hair. I bought a "multiclava" at Eddie Bauer to see if I can tame it and not look like Bozo the Clown. Thanks for the encouragement. Now, I just need to lose the weight and then these won't fit. Good thing some of them have drawstrings!!
