AOPS intro to geometry

Recommended Posts

I know many say how much harder the geometry book is, but I wanted to give a different perspective. Two of my kids (both with learning dysabilities) found AoPS Geometry easier than algebra. My other one and the one I tutored through all the books found algebra and geometry about equally difficult.

I wish they'd make videos for this book.

I wish they would make videos too!

DS is very visual spatial and loves the idea of geometry. I'm hoping that will continue throughout the class. I was just surprised not to see the link for videos up there. I thought since it was still introductory, they would be there.

You've already gotten your answer, but I wanted to post more sympathy.  DD also misses the video support.

As for the difficulty level, I'll echo what others said:  It depends on the student.  DD takes the online classes because I am of no use whatsoever to her now in math.  I was dreading geometry based upon what I was reading about the difficulty level.  Honestly, I worried excessively.  For DD, chapters 7 and 13 were the most challenging, with the writing problems being the real sticking point.  One thing that I found weird (and I mention it because you said your student is very visual-spatial):  For probably 75 to 80% of the challenge problems DD simply stared at her screen for a long time and then answered the problem.  She generally uses a spiral-bound notebook of graph paper for math, but she used only about 10 pages for the whole geometry class.  When she did feel the need to make a diagram, she used Geogebra and made notes there (?) or on another program.  For DD, most of it seemed very intuitive (and I kind of wonder if that was her issue with some of the writing problems-that she had problems breaking her thoughts down into identifiable pieces-but I truly don't know.)  Just something to look out for, in case your student has any similar challenges.

Best of luck to your student!  DD said it was her favorite class so far.  :001_smile:

My DS found 3 dimensional chapters and some sections of analytic geometry really hard. This kid sailed through Intro to Algebra without blinking. Let's just say he was blinking a lot in geo. :)

I keep wondering what Intermediate Algebra will feel like - not even alcumus for that one.

That's a good point- I think it is the human connection they provide that I'll miss.

He is enjoying the class so far though. Class starts Wednesday and he's already done all of week 1 and the Alcumus for week 2.

He is in public school and did not necessarily think it was a good idea to start this class the last week of his school year :) But I think it will actually work out better as he'll have more free time during the summer. Although with 24 weeks it will overlap next year.
