AoPS Pre-Algebra...Print book, Online book or both?

Recommended Posts

Personally, I really like to have a print book in hand...something to work on that does not involve a screen.  But, I like the features of the online book, particularly the community forum and it looks like there may be some video clip demonstrations, etc.

Is the online book worth it for those features?

I really like having the print book (in fact, I own two, don't ask). You can access short videos for most of the lessons on their website without having to own a copy of the online book. Are these the same videos you mention? I don't know anything about the forum, so I can't help you there. I'm usually an e-book lover, but when it comes to math texts, I really need to be able to easily flip around.

I don't have the pre-algebra online book, but I have others at the intermediate levels.  I've seen where you can post questions to the community that are connected directly to the book, but I've never seen them used.  (I haven't looked that carefully, though.)  You might want to investigate how important the community aspect is to you.  (I don't think it's very important.)

I'm not sure about the video clips either, which aren't found in the intermediate level online books.  But there are already AoPS videos available for free that you can access right now.

I also prefer print books, and recommend that, unless you have another reason.

I've been wondering about this too. We travel and like to lighten the volume of school books, so I'm definitely going to get the online version. And I love that it is integrated to the teaching videos-a huge plus as it streamlines things for you. However, the solutions are only an easy click away, which makes a student give up too quickly I think. I think I will likely end up getting both.

I live overseas and it is a big book and a lot of weight. We went with the online option. So far we have not had any issues using it. It is pretty easy to navigate. Each section in each chapter is all on the same screen, no flipping pages. You just scroll down. Everything is easy to find and get to. Videos are embedded in the book at the appropriate sections. So as you are doing the problems and reviewing solutions, the videos are right there for the student to watch. I don't think the solutions being "a click away" lead to giving up faster than the solutions being a turned page or two away. Alcumus is also linked to each section of the chapter as well. It is definitely more user friendly than kindle books and iBooks.

If I had the option of a print book, I don't know what I would choose. I do like having a book in hand. But the online book has been good too. I like that it is all together for us. And it really is user friendly.
