Excellent, well written, very accessible Scholastic book about the development of the atomic bomb and the international espionage around it. Posted May 18, 2017 Share Posted May 18, 2017 (edited) Well, summer was for fun reading here, so nothing terribly classic or impressive ;) from my DSs' 14yo-ish summer favorites: - Eragon series - Harry Potter series - Percy Jackson series - trilogy: Truckers; Diggers; Wings (Pratchett) - His Majesty's Dragon series (Novik) -- only the first 4 books had come out; there was *suggested* intimate relationships, but nothing explicit -- don't know about books after #4 - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Adams) -- a few very brief crude references; books 3, 4, 5 were not very creative/funny, and had a lot more explicit language and s*x - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Adams) - Sherlock Holmes short stories (Doyle) - mini mystery collections - All Creatures Great and Small sequels (Herriot) - House of Stairs (Sleator) - The Colditz Story (Reid) If these had been published back when DSs were in the early teen years, I think they would have liked these: - trilogy: Leviathan; Behemoth; Goliath (Westerfeld) - trilogy: Hunger Games; Mockingjay; Catching Fire (Collins) - Tiffany Aching series (Pratchett) Enjoyed as assigned Lit. during the school year around that age: - Fahrenheit 451 (Bradbury) - Something Wicked This Way Comes (Bradbury) - The Invisible Man (Wells) - Lord of the Rings trilogy (Tolkien) Edited May 18, 2017 by Lori D. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Kendall Posted May 19, 2017 Share Posted May 19, 2017 The 39 Steps by Buchan (a few sequels too I think) The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (really, they should try these. I've given this to teen nephews visiting and they have devoured them as did my 3 sons and a few daughters so far) I prefer the ones written in the 60's and 70's but you need to start with this first one.
