Amy in KS
My 7th grade son will be taking life science next year. He's a very science oriented person, so I feel comfortable he will do fine with it. However, I'd like him to have practice listening to science lectures and taking notes. I also want my son to have layers of learning (audio, books, labs). However, I think videos every day could get old. Could I select only certain videos to watch and/or skip entire lessons or units on the DVDS (just showing a couple per week)? I'd prefer to not have him watch videos every day and add more projects/other things from time to time. I'm a science teacher by training, so I'm comfortable with the material. mom31257
Ds has used it this year. Our co-op was doing Apologia Biology labs, but I didn't want him to do that book. I rearranged the chapters to match the labs, and I only had him watch some of the videos. I tried to look at the content of each one and choose the videos I thought were most interesting or useful. I did have him read the chapters I assigned and do some of the student activity pages. There are oral quizzes on some of the videos in every lesson, but you have those in the teacher material. You could give those yourself.
Amy in KS
Thank you! Would you say they added a lot to his understanding?
mom31257
Thank you! Would you say they added a lot to his understanding? I think they did add to understanding. Some of the features in the videos are very childish, though. For example, they use a puppet to do things like checking the answers to the end of chapter review questions. He was frustrated with those kind of things, so that's one reason I chose to just use the videos that seemed to have the most value.
Aloha2U
Another option could be to use the 3rd Edition along with only the Investigations DVD set. That is what we did this year. Worked great! Edited May 9, 2017 by NCAmusings
Amy in KS
Ack... The puppets would not go over well with this son. It looks like they have a new edition this year for the dvds. Maybe they've corrected that? The Investigations DVD looks interesting, but it looks like the are for the 3rd edition only (we already have the 4th). I didn't realize the video has changed for next year. I watched the video of the new teacher, and she seems like she is reading a script to me. Mrs. Vick is an excellent teacher, so I can't say that I would recommend anyone else as much. They may have possible done away with some of the childish elements, too. You could always ask BJU about those kinds of changes.
Amy in KS
Yes, it does seem quite scripted... maybe it isn't a plus after all.
