Jean in Newcastle Posted October 27, 2008 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Yesterday we came home from a movie to find the house boiling hot. When I looked at the thermostat it was 79 and rising in the house. The thermostat showed that it was set for 90 degrees. I reset it manually for our normal 70. It held and then went down lower as usual for the night. This morning it reset itself again - at 90. No hands in this house are tampering with it. Do you think my thermostat needs looking at or the furnace? I dread calling the furnace company. I can just smell a big bill coming. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
********* Posted October 27, 2008 Share Posted October 27, 2008 If you have a programmable thermostat, it can 'reset' itself to the preprogramed temperature at whatever time it is set to do so. snickelfritz Posted October 27, 2008 Share Posted October 27, 2008 and the furnace is responding to it, my (completely uneducated about furnaces) guess would be in the thermostat. My dh replaced one on his own (and he's not a handyman...at...all...), so you might only be out the cost of a new one. If the re-programming doesn't work. natalie Posted October 27, 2008 Share Posted October 27, 2008 We have a programmable thermostat and for some reason it periodically starts acting wacky. Try turning off the fuse at the fuse box and then turning it back on. So far that has always worked for us. Just like unplugging your computer when it freezes up! Dh looked at the thermostat and discovered that the last time I replaced the batteries (not long ago) I put one of the batteries in upside down. I don't know why it worked fine for a while and then went wonky - maybe it made the two batteries that were put in right to have to work harder?
