Not looking forward to telling DD :(

Recommended Posts

DD got the e-mail this morning (forwarded to my account automatically, so I saw it first). She placed 4th for the IHS award. Which means that, on one hand, she placed really high, at the absolute minimum age (which placed her directly against high school kids, and indirectly against college students). But it also means that she lost. They only fund the top 3. In yet another thing that she had to put herself out there. She has had so many blows to her confidence this year already, and her essay and cover letter showed it.

And, of course, it's finals week. So she needs to Spring back, quickly.

D, it IS such a blow, but I cannot wait to see what it will all lead to a few years from now. She is going to be a winner so many times over. I wish I could channel that confidence and faith to her over the miles. Hugs. Meanwhile, heartiest congrats to her for placing 4th. That is remarkable!

This sort of thing keeps happening to my nephew, but he keeps trying out for things when he's a smidge too young and being passed over. I hope I'm not lying when I tell him that with a year or two of growth, he won't be passed over. But there are no guarantees and it's heartbreaking to watch. I can only imagine if it wasn't a nephew but my own child. This is so hard. Hugs to you and your daughter.

She took it better than I had expected-although I think she's hoping someone has to drop out, since the letter said she was next in line if someone did. And, she still has many, many years of eligibility, since she's eligible until age 22 or until she gets a bachelor's.

I am so sorry she did not make the top 3.    I don't know if it would help her, but ds at age 13 got 1 point out of 60 on the British Math Olympiad, and went on to badly fail the NZ squad selection test 1 month later.  It was so hard -- discouraging, frustrating, embarrassing. But I hope she can see that it will only get better. It is just so tough to be young but so clever and driven.  Asynchrony sucks.

My 12 y.o regularly competes against kids 2-3 years older in golf tournaments. he always finishes 4th or 5th, just out of the trophy/ribbon range. A month ago, he was bracketed with 10 y.o.s    I was wondering where we going to place the trophy.  He played his worst round ever.  there was no drive to compete.

Congratulations. It is a great achievement - it would be for even a 22 year old! And she is only a middle schooler by age.

Keep telling her this. She is really very young and has achieved so much for her age to be discouraged. Even if she is taking it well, keep reminding her of this. Kids sometimes lose perspective and get lost in the moment - it helps if a parent reminds them that they have many more years to do what they are so good at doing.

I'm glad she took it well.  She really should be thrilled.  If she can get 4th now, she has a good chance at getting higher next year.

Out of curiosity, though, what is the IHS award? (Sorry if I missed the thread somewhere mentioning it, I've been trying to get off the computer and do stuff around the house.)

International Herpetological Symposium. This is their equivalent of the pre-baccalaureate and undergrad funding awards that SSAR offers for the JMIH (with a much more formal and publicized application process). IHS is more focused on captive husbandry and breeding, and has more ties to the commercial herp industry and zoos than the other conferences she regularly attends.
