tld
This is for my son who has completed my original list for the year. We still have a month of school left, but he has worked hard and I'd like his finale books to be quality but enjoyable. For reference, his favorites this year have been "The Wind in the Willows" and "Alice in Wonderland". On the other hand, I was realizing that we didn't read a biography this year, so something really good in that genre might be a good option too. (Any time period as we have been weak in history this year.)
Ms.Ivy
My 5th grade son enjoyed "Bomb" by Steve Sheinkin. Not exactly a biography, but an interesting science-oriented history narrative.

Junie
The first book that I thought of was "I, Juan de Pareja". "Amos Fortune" is also a good history read.

Parkway Academy
The Indian in the Cupboard - It isn't really historical fiction, nor is it a biography, but it is an engaging story for that age group and there are several references to pieces of history upon which you could expand. Wonder - Just a fun read with a beautiful message about life. Watership Down - It sounds like your son likes stories with talking animals? My husband and his reader guy friends can't say enough good about this book. By the Great Horned Spoon - A historical fiction my son enjoyed in fourth grade.
