X-post-Best books about educating the older grades

Recommended Posts

I'd really just like some inspiration. My daughter will begin 8th grade this year with a few 9th grade classes. I haven't read Teaching from Rest because I heard that is was mainly geared toward families with younger kids. It doesn't have to be only for older kids, just not focusing on dealing with young kids, multiple kids or ages, etc.

I enjoy reading some of the articles in the catalogs I receive: Classical Academic Press and Memoria Press.

They are free, short, and sometimes inspiring. I also enjoy some of the free audio talks that Circe and IEW have done over the years.

I second the Well Trained Mind and the Memoria Press catalog articles. They are really inspiring to me. I also read homeschooling books in general. I started a Charlotte Mason one, I think it is the volume just called homeschool or something similar, and I felt it was geared toward younger children, so I put it up. I am now reading Climbing Parnassus, an Apologia for Latin and Greek. I find it inspirational though not about homeschooling.

In addition to the WTM book and especially if you're considering college for your child, I recommend Jeanne Gowen Dennis's Homeschooling High School: Planning Ahead for College Admission; the author makes homeschooling through high school seem doable. (It is written from a Christian perspective, but I recommend it to all.)

Some other valuable reads:

What High Schools Don't Tell You - 300+ Secrets to Make Your Kid Irresistible to Colleges by Senior Year by Elizabeth Wissner-Gross

and her other book: What Colleges Don’t Tell You by Elizabeth Wissner-Gross

Another I'd recommend is How to Get Into the Top Colleges by Krista Klein and Richard Montauk. This book is a helpful overview of the entire college application process and is particularly helpful if your child is aiming toward any moderately selective college.

Books by Cal Newport are well worth reading.

Regards,

Kareni
