happy7
My son did Algebra 1 at home using Foerster/Math Without Borders starting 7th and finishing fall of 8th. He is currently taking Geometry with Thinkwell and will finish this summer. I am thinking of placing him in AOPS classes starting in 9th so we can get the a-g approved classes he needs. Would he start in Intermediate Algebra? Math comes naturally for him, but I am concerned that the AOPS method will be too new for him. I would rather have him take an Algebra II class that he can perform well in and then take a SAT subject test than bomb an AOPS class. bibiche
Could you get the Intermediate Algebra book out of the library to see if he is ready for it? There are readiness tests on the AoPS site, but you might be better off paging through the book. You could also take a look at the Intro to Algebra book to make sure he has covered all the topics there.
Roadrunner
I would highly recommend you start in Algebra B class. Read their recommended placement notes.
Julie of KY
Intermediate Algebra comes after a traditional Algebra 2 class. Algebra B is more what you are looking for.
Lilaclady
My dd started with intermediate algebra after doing the algebra and geometry books at home. It was a steep learning curve getting used to the proof writing but it has been her favorite Aops class so far.
8filltheheart
My ds jumped into intermediate as his first AoPS class and didn't have any problems BUT he had already completed Foerster's alg 2 as well.
Targhee
It's hard because they don't cut-off content in the same places as most math programs. Part of Algebra 2 is covered in AOPS algebra B, but not all of it. AOPS int Algebra covers part of traditional Algebra 2 plus part of traditional "precalculus"... It's not neatly aligned. Mine is taking Int. Algebra in the fall, so I don't speak from BTDT, however she's done PreA (on her own) and Alg A/B, Intro to C&P, and just finished Intro Geom all with AOPS online classes and the online classes are very demanding even for those who are "good" at math (have had past success and quick pick-up of new concepts). So, because the course is fast-paced and demanding, the format is new, and it doesn't cover some of the Alg. 2 concepts (because they were done in Alg B) I would not start with Int. Alg. I'd start with Alg B. You can do both in one school year (I think that's a total of 40 weeks online class). Good luck with whichever decision you make!
