Tanaqui
FFS, it's not even April yet! School isn't even out for another 8 - 13 weeks! Edited April 1, 2017 by Tanaqui
CadenceSophia
Ehh. It is April in like a minute. School will be out next month here. Thanks for sharing! My kids love reading programs of all kinds :)
Tanaqui
Also, I don't know what I think about their reward books. I mean, they're not horrifically awful or anything, and clearly they were trying for a range of tastes - but wow, so not the lists I would've picked. luuknam
12 weeks to summer break here, iirc. Also, I don't know what I think about their reward books. I mean, they're not horrifically awful or anything, and clearly they were trying for a range of tastes - but wow, so not the lists I would've picked. It looks like my oldest could get the first Harry Potter book, if the grade level is by the grade they've finished, not the grade they'll be entering. And I'd been considering giving him that to take to summer camp with him, so, I think this year's choices are okay. Last year we didn't do it at all because their choices were too lousy. I haven't looked at the choices for my younger. ETA: "She Persisted" looks okay. Or "I Dissent". Not sure he'd go for either of those though. I suspect Geronimo Stilton. ETA2: N/m, that wasn't the actual list. Actual list looks boring and not worth it. Edited April 1, 2017 by luuknam
fralala
Also, I don't know what I think about their reward books. I love your positive attitude. We can never do summer reading programs because we get bogged down with the logging down, and end up using the logs as bookmarks, and then they end up getting milk rings or coffee stains on them or being used to jot down notes, but in the scheme of things this doesn't seem like a terrible program. Would it be derailing things too terribly if I asked what your list would be?
shawthorne44
We might do this one. We've had the same problem mentioned by a PP. But, it is only 8 books. So, maybe we could get it done during the initial energy. Sad thing is that I had to look if there was a store close enough for me to drive to get a free book. There isn't, but there are two where places we do occasionally go.

Tanaqui
See, now I'm on the spot! I have to think about it. It's not a list for a specific child, after all, it's a list for a lot of kids, who aren't at the same level and don't have the same interests (or, for that matter, the same parents). Definitely keeping the illustrated Harry Potter on the list, though. That book is pricey! I'd be thrilled to get it for free! Might make my girls do this reading log thing just so I can do that. A is standing behind me going "NO, NOT HAPPENING" but it turns out she thought she'd have to write about them. LOL!
Junie
You have to follow this link to find out what books you can earn. Harry Potter is not on the list. The other link just shows books that might interest that grade level. It's a bit misleading. And I think the selection of free books is rather poor. I would have hoped for some Newbery books or other classics to be available.

mellifera33
Oh no! That list sucks full time! Yeah, that list makes it not worth the drive. We'll do the library reading program.
historically accurate
My kids always did this one, since I don't buy junk books. They got super excited to get a Vet Volunteer or Judy Moody or Junie B Jones book. They'd eventually get culled from our bookcases, but they loved it. I only have 1 that fits this age group now, so I don't know if we'll do it.
Jean in Newcastle
I was excited until I saw that it was only for grade school kids.
RootAnn
Most years, the books aren't very exciting. There have been really good ones (one) in the past. However, by the time we actually get the list done & trek 1 1/2 hours to the nearest B&N, the good ones (one) are gone. So, usually not worth it for us. Jean in Newcastle
I have offered to buy my teen the paperback of her choice for any classic read this summer. She's a reluctant reader and it is worth it to me. I get to define "classic".

Incognito
We've done this the last few years, but this year's selection doesn't even have the one or two decent books in each level. FWIW, the child can pick from any age bracket for the reward book. I'm a bit bummed - the reading log itself is easy and then I go buy a couple books there too to thank them for the freebies and add a few newer books to our collection. Probably won't this year.
