BA Alone?

With my oldest dd, we have gradually shifted from thinking of Singapore as the primary curriculum and BA as a great add-on, to thinking of BA as the must-have and Singapore as extra.  I will go through and cross out questions or whole sections from Singapore when it is simply more repetition than she needs, and particularly when there is some overlap in topics.  She loves BA and tolerates Singapore, mostly.  She is 2nd grade age, and approaching the end of level 3 in both curricula.

 

I am considering dropping Singapore and just doing BA.  What do you think of BA as a stand alone?  Will she be missing out on much if we don't do Singapore 4 & 5?  I'm also a bit nervous about the prospect of her reaching pre-algebra twice as fast.

We dropped Singapore for BA in order to save my daughter's love of math. It was painful to convince her that she needed to solve lots of unchallenging problems when she had already demonstrated mastery. Only you can know how much practice your student needs, but going with BA alone worked out well for us.

This is what we've done, and it's been fine. He did Singapore 2, and liked it much better than MM, which we did for 1st. But, once he got a hold of BA3, he has wanted nothing to do with Singapore. So, we've dropped it. Edited March 30, 2017 by SeaConquest

We do just BA with nothing else. It seems to be working fine for DD#1 (also a second grader on track to finish level 3 this school year). I could see some kids needing more practice, but that hasn't been our experience.

 

You could try just doing BA and see how it works. No harm adding something else back in if you feel it's needed.

 

Regarding pre-algebra, I expect we'll take that slowly when we get there (presumably when she's in fifth grade, also presumably AoPS). Or not, if she gets it quickly. But the flexibility is there.

I think it works fine as a stand-alone for an accelerated learner. My DS finished RightStart C in first grade and we jumped right into Beast Academy. I gave Singapore a quick try but we both found it pretty tedious and repetitive. I did supplement with Singapore CWP which I do love and lots of math enrichment so it wasn't strictly a stand-alone for us, but we definitely didn't need any other kind of workbook or formal program.

This is our plan for next year.  He burned through MEP so I figure we'll start at BA3, get him used to some of the puzzle types, and continue on from there through 4 and 5.  It's a repeat of most of the work/concepts but I think he'll enjoy it more.
