gardenmom5
need a girls night movie rec - preferably off the beaten path. old movies are good. pg-13 max. comedy or rom/com. any suggestions? eta: we plan on eating take-out in front of the tv - probably chinese/thai. (though I'd be happy with indian.) maybe even treat our feet. I expect we'll have about three hours before the males start returning home . . . . gardenmom5
I wanna watch movies with YOU. Add in The Thin Man. The Big Sleep (Bogart/Bacall) I happen to like older men. like that old fellow what's-his-name in african queen. absolutely crazy about him . . . . (how to marry a milionaire) that's up there with sean connery as indiana jones dad appalled yelling "jr, they're shooting at us!" for inside jokes at the role. you know, that would be fun. maybe a local mom movie night. the person I'm having this with is leaning towards the importance of being earnest (I will only watch the michael redgrave version) or back to the future of all things.

Seeking Squirrels
I'm so not made for the "girls night movies"! My first thought of a great movie to watch if we had a few hours - Lord of the Rings or a Marvel movie! I saw the Princess Bride recommended, though, that one is great! Wallace Shawn and Cary Elwes were just at our comiccon last week! The Decoy Bride - David Tennant!

Lori D.
Oh! Lars and the Real Girl is awesome! Very quirky, but very sweet and affirming -- and it is a premise that *could* have gone sideways so badly in so many ways, but didn't. An entire town ends up pulling for a man on the spectrum who is struggling to grow more normal. That also reminded me of these films, where single parents pour into their children, but also find romance: Dan in Real Life Dear Frankie If you like Jane Austen films, Austenland is a hoot AND sweet -- both parody AND romance. :) And the Bride and Prejudice as a modern version with a "Bollywood" (musicals of India) spin is a hoot. And here's an oddball one that I really enjoyed: Warm Bodies -- romance with humor and some action film elements in a zombie apocalypse setting! :) And -- I just realized that ONE film I listed is rated R (the rest are PG or PG-13) -- but In A World is an awesome indy film -- very quirky, but so affirming of a strong supportive sisters relationship for once (instead of being rivals). There is a sweet romance that is just at the starting point by film's end. I think the R-rating comes from some swear words and from describing (but not graphically) how far things went (or rather DIDN'T go) when the married character was tempted by another man -- I LOVE the reaffirmation of that marriage at movie's end! You didn't mention how old the "girls" are who will be watching -- this one is definitely for an adult girls night. I know I've described this strangely, but as a Christian, I found this movie very affirming of the value of family relationships. :) Since you esp. like the older Philadelphia Story, you might really like one of the 1930s-1940s films I listed. I also just ETA onto that list. Have a happy girls night on Saturday! Warmest regards, Lori D. Edited March 30, 2017 by Lori D.
Farrar
Dh and I were just talking about In a World. That movie was so funny. But I can't remember what got it the R rating, honestly. I'll second Bride and Prejudice if you've never seen it. It's great fun.

tammyw
Oh totally saving this list for watching with my daughter! How about Then and Now? That old movie with Demi Moore. Father of the Bride Bend It Like Beckham (I loved the music so much in that I bought the soundtrack and also the DVD) Flipped - a sweet movie about a girl who has a rush on a boy that moves into town and shows their relationship through the years. I loved that movie. The Outsiders - favorite movie from my childhood. Grease! My daughter loooooves that one.
