Comfort food that can be eaten with the fingers and not make a mess.

Cookies would probably be my go. Something like oatmeal raisin or large soft molasses (or chocolate chip I guess if you're not me). Cupcakes seem too festive.

Any item that can be comfortably eaten from a napkin without fuss would be a good choice. We find that comfort sweets go quickly: brownies, cookies, and sweet breads.  If you know that everyone will be staying to eat AND that plates will be easily available, then savory items like asiago bread sticks or focaccia cut into wedges would also work.

There isn't anything you could make that would be inappropriate. Sometimes I bake things and try new recipes. Sometimes I just ice a plain sheet cake made from a boxed mix and frosted from a can and cut into squares. I have to take meals to church dinners and to people's houses often. I used to worry about the fact that my food was plain. I don't make recipes passed down from my heritage or anything, lol.  My brownie recipe comes from my Betty Crocker cookbook. But it is more important to do my part and bring something I have learned than to worry about what I bring. I cook simply at home. And I bring simply to events.

how many servings does it need to have.   if a lot of servings - I would do something simple.  if multiple people will be bringing a variety of items - bring something good.

I've done everything from chocolate cheesecake to brownies to cookies.

I took the cheesecake to the home of a family who lost an adult son.  their large immediate and extended families were there to be together and support each other. a person "receiving" the food being brought over - put the cheesecake aside to make sure the parents got some.

oh- or a 7-up pound cake.  Jennie robertson has a fabulous story about her standby for all ill and deceased she sends a 7-up pound cake.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'll make some banana bread.

Perfect! Nothing hard to eat or messy. You want what some call "finger food."

The last reception that I went to had several kinds of cake with thick frosting and no forks!
