I have an HP color laser printer that works really well...we print a lot of stuff too.

It has a scanner, prints on cardstock, and prints duplex, which has saved on paper.

Laser printers and the toner cartridges are more expensive, so that's something to consider, but the original toner lasted us over a year. We replaced them with a generic brand and the new cartridges should last longer than the originals.

I ditched color and got a laser printer, copier, scanner, fax, and I love it!  It's a Brother MFC-7860DW (MFC=Multi-function Center).  It has a document feeder.  It prints on two sides automatically.  The toner cartridge is only $43 and does 2000 pages, so it costs WAY less than ink jet cartridges or color toner.  I rarely miss the color, especially since I went through at least five different color ink jet printers and had major problems with all of them.  My dh has a pretty good color ink jet (Epson WorkForce), so if I need color, I'll go down to his office.  If I really want it to look nice (ie. Family Christmas letter), I'll get it printed at FedEx or other local printer.

I also have a Brother MFC (2700DW) b/w laser printer.

Reliable, inexpensive, and a work-horse.

The quality of the printing (text) is sharp and outstanding, unlike the inkjet examples I've seen.

Scan, fax, duplex printing, copy, and document feeder functions.

If I need nice color prints I get better quality (for less than ink costs, I'd bet) at a local Office Depot/Kinkos/Staples/Print Shop.

There is a reason Brother laser printers are the (un)official printers of the WTM forum.

My husband does not have access to a color printer. We need something that does an okay job with color.

We had a brother printer/fax/copier for 10 years of homeschool/school. It never quit. Got a new Brother to add scanning, duplex printing and ditch faxing. It's about 4 years ago and it is great.

You will pay a price in much higher ink costs, have a much less reliable machine, and the quality of the text you print will be dramatically lower with an inkjet vs a laser printer.

These are very considerable cons.

For occasional color prints you'd be better off doing it at a local office supply store.

I have a Brother 9020cdw colour laser printer. Its fine for printing colour documents but I'd not use it for actual artwork of any kind. I love it though for day to day printing it's a work horse and much easier to live with than the nightmare succession of inkjet printers I had before it.
