yelah250
My son - 8 and in 3rd grade - is bored to tears with his word study work and is really fighting back about doing them. I'd like to provide him with harder words because the differentiated "challenging" list that his teachers are giving him are not cutting it. Any suggestions? Thanks! regentrude
Does he need such lists at all? My kids learned vocabulary and spelling just fine through copious reading.
yelah250
Does he need such lists at all? My kids learned vocabulary and spelling just fine through copious reading. Probably not - that's why he's such a good speller now! But they are really insistent on him doing the word study work so I was trying to come up with a dangling carrot. Harder work is motivating for him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
chocolate-chip chooky
We very rarely do any focused work these days on word study, spelling, punctuation, vocab etc - these just kind of look after themselves through reading and writing and life. But every now and then we pull out a book called Webster's Word Power Essential Students' Companion. https://www.bookdepository.com/Websters-Word-Power-Essential-Students-Companion-Betty-Kirkpatrick/9781842057650 It has heaps of sections that are fun to quiz each other on. eg commonly misspelled words, words used within different occupations/fields, idioms, words we borrow from other languages etc. Good fun :)
