Need a structured online English Class for 10th

Recommended Posts

My son needs a structured Lit class for 10th that includes writing assignments. The Lit classes at Wilson Hill don't look very appealing, and the ones at Well Trained Mind feel like they are part of a series that we're not really following.

He needs the structure that a live online class provides, with assignments and homework. He works very well with his classes at Wilson Hill Academy, so something along those lines would be great.

(his other classes next year will include: Calc AP at Wilson Hill, Logic 2 at Wilson Hill, Spanish at Wilson Hill, Great Conversation at Wilson Hill, Physics with Jetta Seboly, MAYBE Modern Am History with me --we're not working well together right now, so this is a big if, and then an English class of some sort??).

He's taken lit classes at onlineg3--great offerings, but too unstructured for him.

Thanks for any suggestions.

ETA: I am wondering if Great Conversations will be enough--I think it just might be now that I look at it. He's not a big reader, so I think this could work as a stand-alone lit class. Does anyone know if the Great Conversation has any writing requirement as part of it?

If you decide GC isn't enough literature/writing instruction, what about Center for Lit* with the writing component? If you go with Modern Am history, you might add CfL's American Literature class? Not an inexpensive option, but they're currently offering an early registration discount.

*I don't have BTDT advice on 10th grade English, as my high schoolers have both opted for PS, but DD12 will likely go this route and we're tentatively planning to stick with CfL. So far, we've done their Junior High class only. It has been very motivating and high-interest. It turned my reader into a passionate, die-hard reader.

Check out the online class listing. Excelsior (Christian), Big River, AIM Academy, Blue Tent (might be full already), HSDLA online (Christian) .. there was another provider that I can't remember that had interesting choices of lit, but maybe not integrated writing and lit.

ETA: Bright Idea Press and Open Tent Academy

We haven't used the GC courses at WHA, but I think they are supposed to cover history and literature, so adding another full English and a history class seems like too much. I don't know how much writing GC requires, but I think there is some at the high school level.

If anything, maybe add a composition course OR do a separate history that incorporates more writing than usual.

My son is taking GC 5 this year at WHA along with Rhetoric 1. Between the two, I feel that he is covering plenty of reading and writing!  In GC 5 he has had or will have had to write essays for the second, third, and fourth quarter as well as for the mid-term and final exams.  He has a list of 18 books of which many have been read in their entirety, and then some in part.  Assignments over the readings vary but quite frequently consist of comprehension questions and discussion questions.

My son's 10th grade year is comprised of the following:

Pre-Calculus - WHA

GC 5 - WHA

Rhetoric 1 - WHA

Pre-AP Chemistry - WHA

Spanish II - WHA

Latin II - Lukeion

He is a motivated, self-disciplined student and yet spends long hours daily on school work due to the heavy load.  He also plays basketball and cello.
