Does he still have one more year after this?

Yes! But the competition is getting fiercer so nothing is ever assured.

And great news, there is a girl on the team this year!

If not "assured", it's 99.x% sure, I would think. There are multiple competitions to mitigate for a bad day. When you say "competition is getting fiercer" is there increasing interest/effort, or does there just happen to be a batch of strong contenders coming up, or is the potential pool being strengthened by highly educated foreigners (or something else)?

I have two pieces of advice with these things:

Be humble!

Be proud!

:)

Happy day! Give him my congratulations, Ruth!! And I love that there's a girl on the team. :hurray: :hurray:

(I can't wait to tell DD that there's a girl on the team! Thanks for sharing that.)

I'm so pleased too!  There were only 2 girls at the camp of 26, so it is just great that she made it all the way to the team.

Interestingly, the team leader has offered the entire squad of 12 to train with the team.  Given that last year ds got very targeted feedback on the assigned proofs, it will be a lot of extra work for the people running the team training. So very nice of them!  Last year the team trainer was from Harvard, and this year he is from Cambridge.  So the kids should get a good work over!

You are absolutely right. NZ has a large number of highly educated Chinese immigrating to NZ as a lifestyle choice, and they are well aware of the IMO as it has huge status there. NZ is *very* multicultural as it uses a targeted immigration program to bring in well educated people to improve the economy. So yes, the potential pool is being strengthened.  However, this year also has a very strong batch of kids.  The team has a shot at 3 silver and 3 bronze, and 4 of those kids are returning next year (in fact I think 3 of them will be only 16 including DS, so they could stay longer than 1 more year although they won't). New Zealand in its entire IMO history has only had 1 gold and 9 silver I think. So it is combination of both of the factors that you brought up.
