Online geometry class

Recommended Posts

My daughter is liking geometry class at Wilson Hill Academy with Mrs. Smith. We are planning to continue next year with Algebra 2 with them.

Yes, we second WHA with Mrs. Smith. Ds15 has been taking math courses there since Geometry and really enjoys it. He is now in Pre-Calculus with Mrs. Stublen who we can highly recommend for Algebra 2 as well.

Derek, I must add that it is mostly your helpful and enthusiastic posts regarding WHA that made me sigh my dd up. I am grateful to you for it :)

Glad to hear its going well, pinkelement. Sorry I couldn't comment on the other math instructors since we've only had two. However, I seem to recall hearing good things from others on here about Mr. Reini.

Since you're dd is currently taking geometry at WHA, I was wondering if you would mind sharing how she normally does with math? The reason I ask is that our son is more of the math whiz in our family. So that's my frame of reference. I am wondering how challenging it may be for students generally speaking, especially for those who may struggle more? Our middle dd struggles with math quite a bit and has never really liked the subject. While our youngest dd is somewhere in between.

Thanks,

Mrs. Stublen is not teaching Algebra 2 this year. It looks like the only choice is Mr. Reini. She really liked Geometry class, so I hope Algebra 2 will work out for her as well.

Mr. Reini is great. We have Alg II now, had Geometry with Leslie Smith last year. My son far prefers Mr. Reini (even though he liked Ms. Smith too).

Not live, but my high school kids have enjoyed TabletClass Geometry. In fact, I have a 9th grader who just finished it last week! I've had three students take this class and it has prepared them well for higher level math.

Mom25girls, we used TabletClass for Pre-Algebra and liked it prior to moving to AoPS and then WHA.

Can you elaborate a bit on how Geometry worked for your kids? I'm familiar with Mr Z's format and online lessons. What I am curious about is how he handles the proofs and the grading of them? The thing a bit trickier with proofs is that there is more than one way to solve a problem . Hence the grading can be harder. Was that ever a problem for you?

Thanks,

I am a few years behind you and Derek, since my okdest is 11,but my Dd is signed up for PreA with Mr. Reini for next year. Glad to hear a hearty endorsement. :)

Hah, good question. I wouldn't call her a mathy kid. If left alone, she probably wouldn't do math for pleasure; writing, crafting, yes for sure, but not math. With that I think she has a pretty good grasp on math and it doesn't scare her. WHA geometry class keeps her busy with anywhere 2 to 3 hours of homework for each class, so 4 to 6 hours per week, so she doesn't fly through it. On the other hand she gets all the high A's in it. So, I really don't know how much is she really being challenged by it. I wonder by that, actually.  I like the book they use (Jurgensen), so I trust that it is a thorough study of Geometry, so for now I am leaving it at that. :)

Don't know how much of help that was..

Thanks,

This hasn't been a problem for us. I just asked my 9th grader who finished last week and she replied "I once had an issue because I didn't remember the proof that seemed suggested but I just used a different proof and arrived at the same answer. Isn't the important thing about math learning how to think?" Also, she reminded me that John Zimmerman is always an email away. AND he responds promptly. My kids are always really excited when his name shows up on our caller ID. It's like a celebrity sighting! I've homeschooled for 19 years and finding a math program that worked for my girls has been challenging. We use TabletClass from Pre-Algebra through Algebra II. Two of my daughters completed Algebra II and were really upset that John had not developed a program for Pre-Calc but they're settled into another program. Their new instructor has mentioned that both girls were very well prepared for advanced math with a solid background. I'm ready to exhale now!

Thank you for sharing this, Mom25girls. That's was one of the things that impressed us the most with John Zimmerman. Not only does he care, but he really demonstrates it through going the extra mile for his students. I always wondered how he pulled that off.  :)

We totally agree! John is such a kind man who really cares about about homeschooling families. I've found him to be respectful, inquisitive and always willing to go the extra mile over the years. Truthfully, it's nothing that I imagined from a curriculum provider but I am very grateful.

I was very pleased with WHA Geometry. I wanted a class that uses the Jurgensen text and was heavier on proofs than some others. The class did cover a fair number of proofs and some of the higher level problems ("C" problems from sections A,B,C) were assigned. The course was well done, the teacher extremely organized and responsive, and the child that took it says he loves geometry, which was one of my goals as I also absolutely loved it as a student but did not think I could do it justice as a teacher.

I should add that this is a child who does not struggle in math and did not need extra help beyond the class sessions, so I don't know how this class would be perceived by a student who struggles more.
