Insertcreativenamehere
I've heard that CLE Math is too procedural and that it should be supplemented with more of a conceptual approach. If you supplement it, what do you use?
Guest
I did. I stopped. We do play a lot of math games of all sorts (dice, cards, board, verbal, paper...).
3girls4me
I have used Process skills in problem solving some and also math mammoth. I don't supplement everyday, but I try to incorporate one of those 2-3 times a week. I don't know if all CLE users would think it's necessary, but when I started adding it in, my daughter looked utterly confused by the problems at first, so I realized it would a good move to have her so some "different" math. Blossom'sGirl
I use Singapore Challenging Word Problems. I only use CLE 5th grade up but use CWP from 2nd grade up along with RightStart till 4th. I don't think CWP are absolutely needed. but I own them and I do like them. My youngest is using the tattered book 6 and may end up being the only one to finish that book - my older three gave up part way through it. MeaganS
We don't. It seems like it is plenty. Dd does play Prodigy Math, but the only thing I might recommend is word problems. My dd still struggles with their word problems (some learning issues) but I could see how one might want to supplement them.

Bay Lake Mom
I added a daily word problems workbook. There is only one word problem per day. She loves to do this on her own. I check and review if needed. My thoughts? -- I was taught in the ps. I was not taught conceptual math. Math was always easy for me. I just "got" it. So does my dd. We use a lot of manipulatives (if needed). I feel like this has become the new thing to worry about. The new Mom Guilt. If they struggle with math, then go deeper to explain the why. I feel like some of these programs make it so much more confusing than it needs to be. This is one Mom Guilt that I have given up. CLE Math has been awesome for our family!! I'm so happy we found it!!!

TracyP
I do not think CLE needs conceptual teaching added. Most of the concepts are very well taught. (My kids have needed additional teaching with a couple topics. I used MM to do this with my oldest, but now I have no problem doing it myself.) It is, however, weak in word problems and problem solving. I like Beast and Zaccaro to supplement that aspect.
tmstranger
I don't think that CLE needs supplementing, but I feel like my child needs supplementing. My oldest is very gifted in math, but this younger one needs more support. He does really, really well with CLE, but sometimes he forgets a topic and gets frustrated. We started supplementing with Beast Academy just one day/week. He loves the change of pace/routine and I think he's being challenged in a good way and is managing his frustration better. WoolC
I do not think CLE needs supplementing, however, I have had to tweak things for my son. The focus on memorizing math facts is too overwhelming for him, each day the curriculum adds new facts and he eventually shut down. I crossed all of the math fact drill out of his lessons and continued moving through the new concepts in CLE. We have been using Kate Snow's Addition and Subtraction Facts that Stick instead of drilling with CLE and that has worked perfectly.
Insertcreativenamehere
Thanks for the feedback. We've been using it for years and my kids are doing well with it. We do use some Beast as a supplement, but it's good to see that many of you don't find it necessary to supplement at all. :)
Sahamamama2
We do not supplement CLE Math with anything other than real life.
sbgrace
I saw a lot more conceptual teaching than I expected when we switched to CLE. I do think it's weak in word problems, though. I like Singapore FAN Math Process Skills and Problem Solving with CLE. The books actually teach how to think through and solve the problems. They are also relatively short, so good for adding to another full program with just a problem or so a day.
Guest
I did. I stopped. We do play a lot of math games of all sorts (dice, cards, board, verbal, paper...). Oh I lied. My son does do Kumon Measurement and Geometry in between years of CLE. Like, a summer thing, but rarely actually in the summertime  But not because of a glaring lack we saw in CLE, because he started those books in K and wants to keep learning from them...
