What do you outsource?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about next year and if we do our online school, trying to thing of better uses of the $.

I was thinking of outsourcing more.

What do/did you outsource?

Do you wish you would have outsourced a different subject?

What grade did you start outsourcing whatever subject or activity?

Did you like it or not?

Would you do it again?

We outsource:

KONOS once a week for little ones.

For teen-

Great Books History/Lit

Art

Science labs this year and all of science next year

Next year- Rhetoric

I consider Latin quasi outsourced because it's on DVD. I don't teach it. I grade it and I can help if needed, but it's hands off 95% for me, so not sure if that counts.

Oh and I didn't actually answer your questions!

I started outsourcing oldest in 8th grade, initially for writing and Art. I took over writing this year continuing with IEW as used where we outsourced.

I think those were good subjects to start outsourcing with and wouldn't have done differently in hindsight. The first online outsource we did was 8th grade as well- WTMA Notetaking class. Excellent class. Very happy we did that. It was a good class and a nice intro to online courses for dd.

I outsource KONOS because I think it's a good program I have no patience to do myself. It gets my little ones out with someone else and enjoying learning with other kids occasionally. I will also outsource Art for them in the future because I am not remotely artistic. We have access to a wonderful teacher and plan to utilize her as much as possibly.

We've been very happy with all but one thing we've outsourced. It hasn't been a horrible experience, just wasn't as we expected. We won't use that instructor again but will still use the company. It simply wasn't a good fit, if that makes sense.

We've always outsources music.

Most other things we've done in elementary school have been occasional - so we outsourced for periods of time or when a good opportunity came up.  So - art class for a term, or drama camps in summer, that sort of thing.

We've quite often done physical education stuff that way, because often there were other kids required, or equipment we didn't want to invest in.

We've done some outsourcing of science through the Young Naturalist society.  It's free and gives access to all kinds of things I can't, so it's really an easy choice.

I'd have outsourced language if I could afford it.  As is, I have some rusty French and rustier Latin, so we made those work for us, but that is the main reason we decided to send dd12 to public school for jr high where she can do an immersion program - I'm not able to give her that level of instruction.  Had that been impossible we might have looked at some summer camp opportunities.

For elementary:

Science (Mystery Science)

Wiring (IEW DVD programs)

Art (art classes or camps)

Middle school:

Science (mostly BJU distance learning online)

Algebra 1 (local middle school)

Foreign language, levels 1&2 (local middle school)

Writing (IEW DVD's)

I am very happy with all of these and would do them again.

Elementary age:

- Spanish - online Skype lessons through Homeschool Spanish Academy

- Literature - just for fun because DD wanted to have a class live online with other kids

- Piano and Choir - and I'd do the same for any other music she chose

- Athletics - gymnastics, dance, circus arts, swimming

We haven't outsourced art, but I'd do that one as well if she wanted to learn something specific rather than dabbling in everything.

Not a lot. I tend to use outside sources as part of a home class. We learn from the instructor, but I carry on at home what I want done with the subject.

So my kids take art classes out of the home. They do sports activities which I include as part of their PE. They take classes at co-op, but I incorporate what they do there into my big picture.

My high schooler is doing chemisty this year at co-op which is pretty hands off for me. She does all labs and tests there. She works on that teacher's schedule who does the grading.  I appreciate the help. But in the end, it isn't a paid online class. It is still a tool in my class. I can add to the class as I see fit for my plan.

Love it! It's been amazing for DD. She started out already knowing some basics. She went from hesitantly using the Spanish she knew to speaking with some confidence in a month, and being a chatterbox in a year.

Thank you.  I think we will do it.   How often do you do lessons?

Everyone please keep posting what you use.  It may benefit someone else.

I had never heard of this and it sounds awesome.   Thank you so much for posting about it.

Art, but only because MIL is an artist and offered to teach the kids.  Now MIL is traveling so DD is in art school one day a week taking classes in animation, drama, art and civics, musical theater, and drawing.  DD is also taking a guitar class.  I suppose I could say I used to outsource physical education when the kids were in sports (boys) and dance (girl), but I am not sure that really counts.

We've done 30 minute lessons anywhere from 2-4 times per week, depending on what else we were doing and how close we were to our immersion trip. The first lesson is a free trial lesson. Then I bought a pack of lessons (I think 10?) and scheduled five with randomly chosen teachers. At the end of each lesson, I asked DD for feedback. The last few of that pack, I had her repeat the teachers she liked best. From that, I used her top picks to schedule out all the rest of her lessons. The larger the package you buy, the cheaper each individual lesson is.

I hadn't considered IEW videos as outsourcing since I still help and look over papers, but others have mentioned it, so I guess so far we have done IEW, art (my dad has an art background and is teaching them), and piano (if you count Hoffman Academy).  Also gym (at co-op) and sports (but I need to get more of these on the schedule).

Over the years I have outsourced different things with different children. Besides Art, I did not outsource anything for K-8 for any of them. And altogether I would say that most of their High School work has been done at home with me, but sometimes opportunities/challenges came up and out-sourcing was our best option. Since we have a bit more $$ now, I do it more with the younger ones.

  • A few Art Classes for all of them, in programs for kids in different colleges
  • Drama at the co-op one year for 2 children
  • Debate at the co-op three years for 1 child
  • Several courses with The American School for 1 child - 2 years of Math and English, Health, Psychology, US History, Environmental Science
  • German (online Ok State) for 1 child. Latin, French, and Spanish were done at home with me, depending on the child/year
  • A few workshop-length (6-8 weeks) online writing classes with several providers - Write Source, Write at Home, Time for Learning, Bravewriter. Each child took 1-2 over the High School years
  • Science labs for 1 child for 2 courses (Bio and Chem) at a Christian School. The rest of the labs have been done at home
  • Geometry correspondence course with Seton for 1 child
  • Physics and Alg 2 online this year for my youngest
  • Pre-Calc online next year for him.
  • Senior Thesis online for 1 semester for him next year. I could totally do this at home....but I have enough going on next year and I want to enjoy my last year homeschooling!!

Oh - and soccer/ballet/fencing/swimming over the years.

Not enough at this point! I wish we could outsource a bit more, especially Art.

This year (2016-2017), for 4th/4th/6th:

Music

Piano lessons (my mother)

Choir (local children's choir)

Next year (2017-2018), for 5th/5th/7th, the plan is:

Music

Piano lessons (my mother)

Choir (local children's choir, if it is still up and running)

French

TPS French 1 or French 1A for oldest

I wish we could:

  • Completely outsource Art (at home, no driving!)
  • Completely outsource Physical Education (at home, no driving!)
  • Partially outsource Science (Chemistry this year, Physics next year)

A better option would be to have a better brain all on my own, and know more Grammar, French, Music Theory, Science, and Math, alas. :crying:
