I'm enormously relieved that they finally managed to trace these bomb threats -- the Jewish school where my kids attend part-time was evacuated twice in two weeks, and these threats have been extremely disruptive.  But really, did the Forward have to lead with the detail that the kid was homeschooled?!

Hi JennyD,

I have wondered about your boys' school as I have read the news lately. Glad they are safe and that the source has been confirmed and arrested. It does seem that anytime a homeschooler does something in any way negative, homeschooling gets the blame or emphasis instead of mental illness, parenting, drugs, friends, indoctrination or just plain sin/evil.

I had suspected lone individuals, rather than some group effort.  So the IDF found him unfit for service?  That would seem to be a more important fact than how he was schooled.  I hadn't heard anything about his schooling on the report I read but this was a much more extensive report.  Hoax reports are a big problem.  Some of it is revenge, some of it is some twisted idea that one is highlighting important problems or to bring attention to oneself--- the people who self inflict hate speech or actions and try to blame others, sometimes it is for some monetary reason, sometimes hallucinations telling the person to do it, sometimes excitement over chaos and feeling powerful to disrupt operations.  But hoax reports ranging from threats to Swatting to divorcing spouses false claims of crimes, mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse, etc,   So much wrong going on and I will tell you that it isn't homeschoolers who are doing any more of it than their proportions in the population.  In fact, it is probably less just because crimes tend to be committed by people with less family togetherness, not more.  That doesn't mean all criminals come from broken families or anything like that.  It is just proportionally more likely to be the case.  But there are enough criminals around to find one with just about any characteristic.  I mean, OJ and I both have Rheumatoid Arthritis. So what?

THe media brings these connections up all the time and not just with homeschooling.  Military people get demonized a lot.  So do rural people.  And even though there are more criminals in gang-infested areas, there are still many people there who become their victims.  And the guy may be mentally ill but the much greater majority of mentally ill people are not criminals either.

I had seen a story about him, on the 6 P.M. EDT news from the USA, or on FoxNews.com  however I saw no mention of him being Home Schooled. It is my understanding that in Israel, especially for Males, to not have been in the Military, Honorably, is a horrible Black mark. Certain religious people (Ultra Orthodox?) are I think exempt from serving in the Military, but  Israeli Arabs serve in the Military.    If they found him unfit, he has bad Physical and/or Mental problems.  He caused a huge amount of problems in many JCCs, Jewish schools, etc. and should be locked up, for a long time. Glad they figured this out.
