purpleowl
DD#1 will be participating in Math Kangaroo today for the first time. What happens if kids finish early? Can they turn in their answer sheet and leave? Or can they bring along reading material while they wait out the rest of the time? I just need to be able to prep DD for that possibility. It'll be her first time taking any sort of test in a group setting. Thanks!
hellojwolford
In our experience, the test takers were allowed to leave as soon as they finished. Parents waited in a waiting room and children were escorted to the room when they were done. Last year was our first Math Kangaroo, and it was DS's first standardized test. It was a great experience, and he had a lot of fun! Good luck to your DD today! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Syllieann
At our center this year they can leave. Last year we were at a different center, and they wanted the kids to wait for a group photo afterward. The center we're at this year is doing the photo beforehand. purpleowl
Okay, so it varies! Thanks for the quick replies. :) She gets a little nervous about new experiences, so I hope she finds it enjoyable. It was my idea for her to participate, not hers. ;) She's been doing great with the practice problems on the website.
gstharr
The 6th grader has done it twice. Both times, had to stay until time expired. The centers did not have parent lounge. Though signed up for today, we will be passing. Kid has done ISEE, PSAT8/9, AMC8, and ADV SCAT this past year. Don't see need for another test when he rather go to his Math Circle. purpleowl
She did fine. :) They didn't have space for parents to wait, so the kids stayed in the room. She finished after about 30 minutes and was bored afterward. They wouldn't let her bring in a book to read. I haven't had a chance to go over the test book with her, but she felt pretty good about her performance. :thumbup1: Edit: Oh, and they didn't take a group picture. Is that unusual? daijobu
I host only middle and high school students now, and I keep them in the room for the duration. Because after the exam I pass out their certificates and funny VR tattoos. And they all hang out afterward going over their problems. (I've already collected their scantrons.) We skipped photos this time because I just didn't care to do it and I wanted to count and sort the Scantrons and other paperwork. Congrats! We've really enjoyed MK and have found them to be very homeschool-friendly.
Spring Flower
Was the test unusually easy this year? My kids both scored way higher than usual. Is it the test? Or is it their way awesome teacher? ;)
purpleowl
I got a notification that DD is a winner! (Which I already knew, but this was specific to Math Kangaroo. ;)) On the website it looks like they only recognize 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at both national and state levels, but I was looking around online and it looks like maybe they do more than 3 places, or have in the past? And I see something on there about awards ceremonies, too - where do those happen?
epi
"Winner" could be 10% or more of all participants.

OlgaLA
I guess they only sent winner notifications. The email I got says nothing about the actual results, just that DS is a winner. Not even if it is state or national. Says stay tuned for further notices. Actual state/national rankings will be by email by May 15, individual results will be available online after May 20.

I didn't get a notification email last year and our area director didn't contact us either. I logged in some time in June and saw that my son had won a state award. I'm glad to have advance notice this year! We are moving in June and I would like to collect the prizes before we leave.
Clpretzel
No email here. I suppose that means my kids didn't place. For those of you that know your children won, can you log on and see the results for your kids on your user account?

I was surprised to see the email yesterday. They say results will be available online on May 20th.
Clpretzel
Who sent you the email? Was it the proctor at your test?
OlgaLA
Mine looks like it is from the central office. Very impersonal. I would still wait until official results to decide whether your kid won.
Spring Flower
Who sent you the email? Was it the proctor at your test? Not from the proctor. It was a very generic email from the main office.
