mommy25
Has anyone here used Switched on Schoolhouse for history and science? I was considering it because there is an option within the program to have the text read to the student. Reading is very laborious for my daughter. Trying to figure out how to get her through some of these high school courses and minimize reading. OneStepAtATime
DD is using it for Health. She tried the Integrated Physics and Chemistry but the math was beyond her. 1. Yes it will read the text to you. 2. The voice is very computerized and will not pause in places you would think it would pause so bulleted lists get read as one long sentence. 3. The voice does not pronounce everything correctly. This has triggered some rather long giggle fests...from both of us. 4. There are SOME graphics and animations but very old fashioned. Mostly it is text. 5. It does not review consistently so if you want your kiddo to retain anything I suggest you print out available pages and review a bit each week. 6. It does allow a kind of "guessing" on the little lesson quizzes. If you get things wrong it doesn't tell you what was wrong, only that you didn't get everything right. DD then has to go back through every single one moving answers around trying to figure out what she did wrong. This can get frustrating and it also really doesn't lead to any deeper understanding. However, she still ends up getting As on most of them because she gets so many chances to move the answers around. I don't see this as a good thing. I end up having to sit next to her during the lessons so we can discuss everything and I can confirm understanding before she takes her quizzes. 7. The lessons are dry but they do have some good information and DD does seem to be retaining quite a bit of it over the long haul. 8. She likes mostly doing these things on her own (but again I stay in the room doing other things while I listen in so we can discuss and I also print out pages for review). 9. Others I know have used it without needing to be involved but they had NT kiddos and I have no idea how much their kids actually retained without parental support since they did not test them independently of the program.
Heathermomster
DS highlights and copies the SOS text to a word document and then listens to the text through Word. He also types notes as he goes through the material to study later.
Guest
It might work for what you are looking for. We did not need the text to speech feature, so I can't speak for that. We did find it quite dry though and dropped it after one year. I strongly suggest you and your daughter check out many samples/ demos. I believe there are You Tube videos, also. I can't remembered if it can be resold or not, so another thing I would suggest looking into.
mommy25
Thank you for the thorough review Onestepatatime. :) Definitley things I need to consider. Heather - I didn't know that Word would read the text to you. Thanks Canadian mom - we did look at some samples. Frankly, any science is dry and dull. 😣 Any suggestions? I need to get her through science and I will have to be involved if she is gonna get through it. Anything that is easy and not SO boring?
