Starting new curriculum mid-year

First of all, sorry if I'm starting too many posts. As you can probably tell, I'm still pretty new to this (started beginning of last month) and everything is still kind of confusing while I work to sort it out.

My girls were in first grade when I pulled them out of public school. Since I pulled them out mid-year, it took a little bit of time to figure out where they were, what they know/didn't know and generally how to start. Now that I've been doing this for almost two months I'm started to really get a feel for their learning styles and what we may be missing or would like to add. So my question is, is it common or practical to start a new curriculum mid-year? Like if I wanted to add a reading curriculum (we already do ETC and FLL but no formal reading program) or a geography curriculum (looking at Road Trip USA) is it too late to start? Is it common to carry over a curriculum from one school year to the next?

Thanks!

Tracy

There is no such thing as "mid-year" when you're homeschooling. :-) So when you think you'd like to start something new or different, that's the time to start it.

Don't get too hung up on thinking that a "school year" begins in September and ends in June. There are 365 days in a year, which starts in January and ends in December. It's good to know what "grade" your children are "in," because they will participate in activities that are based on grade level and not age, but practically speaking, there's no real value in thinking that you have to start something in September and finish it in June. :-)

We carry over curriculum.  Last year my son finished at a halfway point in his math curriculum.  We took a break for summer, did some of the extra review pages when he started up again, and then continued where he left off.

With my oldest we had more of a public-school feel to our home: every year started new, every year had 36 weeks designated.  I like the more open flowiness of the youngest's style of education.  It is more relaxed and allows more time without being rushed.

Oh sure! We had a Teaching Textbooks Epic Fail around Christmas, so both my olders started CLE math. We'll just carry over. And I started my one DD with Prima Latina mid-year. Carrying Latin over is common in our house. We go at a slower pace, so we're never done with the curriculum in a year. It's fine.

Just make sure you don't make my mistake - starting a curriculum that you want to finish and give enough of its due, but you also take summer holidays. It's hard to go back to a specific curriculum (in my case it was an Ellen Mchenry unit) once summer hits. If it's something that you can just pick up where you left off its no problem (math and Writing With Skill for us). So just make sure you've got a good stopping point if you take a summer break!
