It sounds crazy, right? Well, according to 7 Eyewitness News, the Buffalo Public School District is claiming that Harris wasn't actually able to un-enroll her kids from school because she doesn't have full legal custody of them. However, Harris has stated that she's always been a single parent and, as such, she of course has full custody of her kids."
SparklyUnicorn
If true this is crap. I hope they sort it out. There was a story of a family in NY who did not file paperwork for many years. They were arrested, but it was sorted out and they were allowed to continue.
Butter
Is this the one we discussed a couple weeks ago? Just because she says she has the type of custody that allow her to homeschool it doesn't mean she does. More information came out that it was a custody issue and something else, too, led to removal of her kids. It looks like the CPS investigation was launched before she ever pulled her kids out. Most of the articles only have information from the mother. http://www.wkbw.com/news/family-court-judge-denies-homeschool-moms-custody-request
SparklyUnicorn
Ah, so there is more to the story.
poppy
She was not arrested for homeschooling. She was arrested for defying a court order. We don't know why the court order to take her children away was put in place. "Children truant from school for unknown reasons" doesn't lead to court orders to remove. There's more.
Mimm
Even if it was true and she wasn't allowed to unenroll them, how in the world do you take someone's children away over that. Children should only ever be removed from the home if they are IN DANGER from staying. I hope there is more to this story. :( ETA: Ah, and it looks like there is. MedicMom
I know a couple people local to this situation, and every single one has said that there is far more to this story. They are people who would likely know due to their professions. Buffalo is generally viewed as a reasonably homeschool friendly district, as far as it's possible in New York.
SparklyUnicorn
Yeah I can see possibly CPS breathing down a person's neck after someone reporting them. I have heard of districts reporting for not getting paperwork or just to be general a-holes about it. But to outright arrest someone? There has to be more to the story. umsami
Glad there is more to the story.... well, not really glad, because of what it may mean for what the kids went through.... but still.. seemed rather unusual for NY.
