hisforhomeschooling
My 7yo devours books. He finished OPG, is working through Memoria Press 2nd grade this year, reads The Magic Tree House, Nate the Great, The Littles, and books like that for fun. The books he is reading for fun are too easy, but obviously reading for fun is important. I am thinking about assigning books as well. I want quality but also content that won't upset him. He does not like reading about bullying or people getting hurt or things like that, so I would rather leave books that deal with those things for reading aloud. That way I can talk it through with him. Any thoughts? Thanks!
eternallytired
My 8yo is pretty sensitive. Last year he enjoyed reading Beverly Cleary (Mouse and the Motorcycle, and later he thought the Ramona books were funny, though initially it distressed him that she wasn't always obedient) Cricket in Times Square Laura Ingalls Wilder (though the later ones when she's older weren't as appealing to him) My Side of the Mountain From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler Tuesdays at the Castle series And some quick, easy reads A handful of the Stanley books (I thought the "Worldwide Adventure" themed ones had a good angle going) Magic School Bus chapter books Marvin Redpost books

8Arrows4theLord
Look at Sonlight's 3rd gr. readers and their grade 4/5 readers. Very good books. Cores P4/5 read alouds & Core A up through Core D read alouds and history readers are all very good books to try also. My son loved: -Gooney Bird books -Dolphin Adventure books -Wheel on the School -The B is for Betsy series -A Grain of Rice - Here's a Penny ( same author as Betsy books), we read the whole set of these -Little Pear -No children, No pets - some very mild suspense, there's a hurricane, no one hurt. Written in the 1950's, my 4 yr. old really enjoyed it. - My Father's Dragon books - Rod & Staff have quite a few chapter books for children. All are very gentle and teach/ reinforce good morals and family life. Edited March 6, 2017 by 8Arrows4theLord
Mrs. Tharp
My son loved the Humphrey books at this age. He also devoured Calvin & Hobbes, Captain Underpants, and the Origami Yoda series, but those last three you'd want to preread and discuss. The Humphrey series is wonderful, though.
