SeaConquest
Is there any benefit to taking the Math Counts and AMC classes if you are already doing AoPS as your primary curriculum? Are they repetitive or cover new ground?
epi
Our child took the AoPS MathCounts/AMC8 basic and advanced classes. I would say that there is math material taught, while focusing on those aspects useful for contests, but they are a way to learn math, at least sample many topics. However, if you only did the "regular" AoPS classes (or books), all the material would be covered. We had originally intended to do all the AoPS contest classes, while using the AoPS books for the regular courses. However we have switched. We'll just use the AoPS classes for regular courses (our child needs the extra structure of course rather than just book), and not bother so much with contest prep (just practice some old tests).
Arcadia
My younger boy did AoPS MathCounts/AMC8 advanced class last summer and it was too much of the same style but the aim for him was a social outlet more than contest prep. However we do have local B&M classes that does AMC8 prep classes so those would be a different style from AoPS. daijobu
My kids took the AMC/MathCounts online AoPS classes for fun. But I would say that if you are already studying out of AoPS textbooks, there is nothing new or different there.
