Homeschooled 9th grader w/ADHD previously in private school: IED/Section 504 Plan necessary?

Recommended Posts

We are homeschooling our 9th grader for the first time this year. He previously attended private schools. We have had him privately tested several times (3d grade and 8th grade) and he has ADHD and a list of suggested accommodations (additional time, note taker, etc.). We are able to accommodate him through homeschooling. He takes some online classes and we have just told the teachers about ADHD and the suggested accommodations and have had no pushback. I had always thought there was no need to even approach the public schools for an IEP or Section 504 plan since he wasn't attending. However, someone recently suggested an IEP would be helpful for the SATs/ACT. (I understand it may be helpful as additional support beyond the private testing results, but is it really necessary?). It seems strange to approach the public school district for an evaluation when we don't plan to send to public (or even private) school. Does anyone have any experience or advice re homeschooling and IEPs/Section 504 plans for a child with ADHD? Thanks in advance.

You don't need to go through the public school.  You already have the evaluations and know what accommodations he needs.  What you might need to do is to document the accommodations you are using at home.  Keep a record.  Write down your own IEP, essentially.  And you may also need to do updated testing at some point, since sometimes evaluations need to be done within the last 3 years to be considered valid for testing/accommodations.

Right, for ACT and SAT, you need to keep a record of all the accommodations you are making, which ones for daily work, which ones for testing situations etc..., and you need to have a record from each year you have schooled. I would go back and write up the accommodations you have been using if you haven't previously kept a yearly record, as far back as you can remember accurately.
