Does this sound like an ok math progression? What to add?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on starting Jacobs next fall with a  10 year old who has completed:

Singapore 4B,

Jousting Armadillos

currently working through this Big Fat Math notebook https://www.amazon.com/Everything-You-Need-Math-Notebook/dp/0761160965

I'm also going to get Real World Algebra for him to go over in advance.

Does that seem like enough in advance of Jacobs?  I thought about having him go back and do SM 5 just to be totally ready, but he was so over Singapore last year which was why we switched to JA.

Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with Sing or JA so this isn't a direct answer to your question. Just something to read in the mean time while your waiting for wise people to answer. :)

We did MM6 except two chapters and then started AoPS Pre-A. It is going well. I'm glad we went as far as we did in MM6. We were both ready for something different though. We want rigorous but interesting and alittle faster. Some days he just doesn't want to think. We bought Jacobs Alg and it looks thorough, less wordy, and interesting(there is pictures) to him. We will start it in a couple of weeks. We just found out we are moving so I need something more independant than AoPS. We made it to Chapter 4 in Aops and he said he's willing to finish it but I think it's unnecessarily hard for a 8 yr old. I want him to continue to love math and I worry he's getting over it with the challenges in Aops. We will hang on to Aops and come back to it later I think. I learned so much from it.

It seems like good prep to me. Mainly, just remember to allow time if it does not seem to be completely seeping in. The time necessary for the information to really be absorbed is not linear. Since you have time, be sure to use it. Everything builds. If the foundation is shaky, it will come back and bite you later.

I was always so worried when Ds would hit a glitch that somehow it meant all was lost. Why was it taking so long? We would never finish the book! All sorts of bizarre anxiety. He would come to understanding in his own time and then fly ahead. It all evened out.

You might want some fun math in times when the Algebra is stressful. Perhaps something like "From Music to Mathematics:Exploring the Connection" or "Music and Mathematics: From Pythagorus to Fractals." Totally different, but still very much math. We used AoPS Counting and Probability. Essentially, he could step away and let the info marinate. It worked wonders. When he went back, it was no longer Earth shatteringly emotional or terribly hard.

Yeah, my DS has "hated" math for a long time. The funny thing is there are lots of times he's excited about what he's doing while he's actually doing it. It's the "idea" of math he most despises.

Good tips! Thank you. :)

I'm going to get Mathematics: A Human Endeavor as well, I don't know why I didn't consider it before but I think it will be a great bridge to Elementary Algebra.
