VirginiaMomof7
I have looked online a bit, but wondered if any of the WTM experts have a recommendation for a summer intensive geometry course for 2017? Thank you!

RootAnn
Is this meant to be a review of a class already taken, an introduction for next year's class, or covering-the-whole-credit-in-summer? Also, how strong of a math student do you have? What have you used in the past? Do you want self-paced or live? How much time will your student have to spend on the class? Self-motivated student or will you have to push/nag/remind? Edited January 24, 2017 by RootAnn
VirginiaMomof7
Good questions. Self motivated student looking to "catch up" a year over the summer. Any format that includes a lecture/assignment component will be fine for a fairly strong math student. Currently taking Algebra I online through Veritas. RootAnn
Two options that I can think of off the top of my head. Derek Owens has a self-paced Geometry class. Start it anytime. If you want to do the grading, you can arrange to get all the answer keys & your price is 1/2 what is listed. Student must be self-motivated because they'll have to pace themselves to get it done over the summer if that is the goal. The whole course is pretty much available once you sign up. Not a live class. Video lectures, homework assignments, & tests. AOPS has an online geometry class. This is for really strong math students. The Geometry class is especially difficult. It is a live class, but not video-based. It is a text-based class. Of the two, I'd recommend the first one over the second one. Another alternative is getting the videos/assignments for any one of several geometry texts (through Ask Dr Calahan, Math Without Borders, or Chalkdust) and have your kid go through the assignments that way. Homeschool Connections also has self-paced recorded math classes. These would all be parent-graded, although some of the options above offer assistance via email or phone if you are stuck and if you buy it from them.
VirginiaMomof7
Thank you, Crazy Lady. The Derek Owens sounds like a good fit, except I will need to adjust the schedule myself. I had hoped to find an "Intensive" that worked that out, and removed me as the source of pressure for my son.😜 Any other suggestions welcome. wapiti
I suggest you ask on the high school board. Geometry can be challenging to fit in over the summer but it's likely that posters on the high school board will have suggestions. If there's a need to finish geometry by August, perhaps it would be better to begin now. SkateLeft
My second dd did high school geometry over the summer between 9th and 10th grade, using K12 International Academy's summer school geometry course. It was pretty intensive... something like 3+ hours a day for a 4 week semester, as I recall. She completed both semesters, for a full credit. I think the course was 8 weeks total. It was very expensive, but totally worth it for her. She was able to accelerate her math sequence just a bit, allowing her to take college level math via dual enrollment during her last two years of high school. RootAnn
I don't know anything else about what I'm linking below, but thought I'd bump your thread & add something I just saw - that Mr D math has a summer intensive & there's a geometry option: https://mrdmath.com/summer-programs/ GeometryTuesdays and Thursdays1:00 pm – 2:25 pm EasternOnline “Virtual Classroom†Edited January 31, 2017 by RootAnn
MorningGlory
There is a thread about Mr D math right now on the high school forum: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/636151-mr-d-math/?do=findComment&comment=7420497

His explanations are clear, the videos don't use up all of your bandwidth, and you get enough to learn it well but not a lot of busywork. It might be a really good fit for your independent learner.
