Look up communist party, Karl Marx, Black Panthers. It relates to socialism and was a symbol that's been used by many extremist groups over the years. This is why so many people now take issue with it being appropriated as a symbol of pride.

It has also been used as a sign of respect and celebration. I think a symbol can mean whatever a group intends. Maybe it's time it was appropriated :)

Sure. Just as long as everyone knows it has negative connotations for different generations and don't mind being looked upon as divisive rather than cohesive.

It seems there are lots of emoticons that can have different meanings depending on the context or who's looking at it. I don't see why this smilie shouldn't be used for that reason when others are.

I agree that the swastika is irredeemable, but I don't think the raised fist is anywhere near that category.

I agree.

On a side note, I thought that little fist emoticon I was seeing was the ASL symbol for the letter "e" and figured it must mean something that started with "e".   Glad it makes more sense now...

Well that will probably work as well as the Swastika which once Hitler used it, no one remembered it was a sacred symbol for hinduism and Buddhism.

People of my generation take it as a symbol of unity. The end. Even my hillbilly friends.

As Nazis took the swsstika and changed it for bad, someone took the raised fist from whoever you think owns it, for good.

Yep, I know it means different things to different people and it's all perception.  Since I just spent two years with my wwII obsessed son studying all things Hitler, Germany, Russia, communism and socialism,  that's what is in the forefront of my mind these days.  :tongue_smilie:
