It relates to socialism and was a symbol that's been used by many extremist groups over the years. This is why so many people now take issue with it being appropriated as a symbol of pride. I don't see why this smilie shouldn't be used for that reason when others are. People of my generation take it as a symbol of unity. The end. Even my hillbilly friends.
