Flu vaccine 2016-17 effectiveness?

I haven't heard a thing, so I am starting to suspect this isn't a bad flu year. I specifically asked at the doctor's office if they had heard about the efficacy of the shot and was told there had been zero cases reported of the flu in our county. I have a friend who says she had the flu last week, but she never saw a doctor. I also know she didn't get the flu shot.

Last week, I was sitting in the ER with my mom, who had flu complications (no shot - positive flu test). Plus, I've been in several doctors offices in the past month. My flu shot has held up just fine.

That being said, I'm pretty strict about handwashing and face touching, and we've been stuck at home a lot due to weather and non-infectious health issues.

Ugh - dd is down 3rd day in with a fever and I'm taking her to the doc soon.  She did have the shot.  Stay tuned.  We also know kids with whooping cough this winter so actually more concerned about that possibility.  She is vaxed for that as well.

My kids picked up the flu from their youth group outing this last weekend.  Youth pastor let all the parents know about a confirmed case yesterday.  Youngest got sick first and I thought it was just a cold because he has had no fever, but then middle got sick a day later and he has had a high fever and other symptoms.  DD got sick at art school today and I had to go get her.  Both youngest and DD got the flu shot, middle didn't.  Youngest and DD seem to be having a milder form of the flu than middle.  Neither DH or I are sick yet, but neither of us have had the shot either.  Kind of a wait and see.

I work in a school and mostly we are seeing the nasty intestinal/stomach virus thing. Dh got it two times since October -- missed a vacation/family reunion because of it.

I never got my kids the flu vaccine (although I got mine at work) which I try to do because of dh's heart issue.

Here's hoping to no flu or anything else.

I haven't heard much about flu season but ours doesn't usually start until late this month and gets going in February. I recently read that the shot is about 60% effective this year.

We've been getting the flu vaccine every year since 2003 and haven't had the flu. Before we started getting the vaccine we'd get the flu about every 2-3 years.

Our newspaper had an article last week I think that this is the worst flu year we've had in 4 years. Many more cases and fatalities. It also started earlier than usual--it's usually just getting going now, but they were having cases before Christmas this year. I'm hoping that our snowy, wintery weather will help as it will keep people more isolated and hopefully there will be less spreading of the flu. The article did say that the vaccine was a good match this year.

My cousin(she lives in Oregon) and her children are battling the flu right now. It's what made me think about it.

We have tons of activities this winter and will be around a lot of people. Looks like we need to up the hand washing and hope for the best. We all had the flu 3 years ago and do not want to get it again.

It's on the rise here in Ohio.  Seems to hang on longer than usual this time around.  (We haven't gotten the flu at our house in a few years and only a couple of us get vaccinated.)  They continue to push the vaccine regardless of whether or not it's very effective.  I feel like it's always about 50-50 that you'll get the flu if you've had the vaccine among people we know.

Trying to remember the research dh did at xmas when a friend who we were supposed to spend our holidays with came down with the flu. He didn't have a shot but the last I knew is still more tired than normal etc. My family suffered from the flu last year greatly, all of us caught in on a trip. Much expense and ruined plans. Skipped the vacination after years of getting it every year. Never again...even the dc's wanted a shot when the signs went up this year!

Most people this year received a 3 strain vaccination including our family. The good news is those 3 strains are a big part of this years flu and the vaccine seems to be effective. The problem is a forth strain has appeared in places. The flu map had parts of the Us and UK hit heavily in pockets, mainly large cities, with many areas clear.

I just looked at the data for my state, so far it looks like there have been fewer cases than in the previous 4 years and the season may have already peaked (usually peaks around this time but last year was later). We've had our share of viruses this fall/ winter but nothing flu-like yet; mostly stomach ick and colds.

Everyone except dh got the vaccine; I believe ours was quadrivalent.

Scientifically, I don't know.  But my experience this year is I have been sicker than I've ever been and I had the shot.  I've had this nagging cough for over a month and around the New Year I had a bout of fever, chills and aches combined with a brutal sinus infection.  I feel like a piece of roadkill that's been hit a few times and left out too long.

No shots here, but quite a few of us did get the flu before Christmas. I think it was close to two weeks before the last of the coughing went away for good. It was my first time to ever have the flu (I have never had a flu shot), and it wasn't a pleasant experience, but I still doubt I'll ever get a flu shot.
