Any suggestions for a gray paint color that doesn't look purple, blue or pink?

I'm painting my living room gray, but it looks blue/purple! Not at all what I wanted!  I know it totally depends on lighting and furnishings, but anyone have a favorite gray paint that doesn't have blue/purple undertones?

 

My dining room is painted french mustard, which is a med gold color. I have old hardwood floors. My couch is dark purple that looks brown sometimes, loveseat is a reddish/brown leather, and recliner is camel color that looks khaki sometimes. I'm painting all trim antique white. 

 

Any suggestions on a favorite gray?

I don't know the answer but if I had the question, I would go to a benjamin Moore store and look at paints and find the colors I liked and ask the salesperson to check the formulas to find out what pigments are being used. That can tell you a lot.

If your ceiling or baseboards are at all cream colored vs white, that will change the appearance of the gray paint.

Adding:  wait until it dries if you are in the midst.  It will look totally different when dry.

Everything will lean toward one side or the other depending on the lighting at the moment. We only repainted our living room several times before my husband accepted that.

 

BUT..I might have home for Revere Pewter? We never tried that one, lol, but I have seen it in other houses.

And it might not be as helpful to learn ok for a particular mane/color on a geographically diverse discussion board. The quality of light varies in different geographies. What looks fantastic in the yellow light of Colorado looks dead in the pink light of the northwest. I've stopped buying clothes in Hawaii to wear in Washington because the light makes the colors lokk different. Same idea with art. Give your local store a shot at helping you out. And try the paint in big swatches on different walls. We painted our living room one color a number of years ago and we got endless comments about how clever we were to use 2 complementing colors. It was all due to the way the sun hit the different walls.

Are you looking for dark or light grey?

 

A darker one I like is Charleston grey and a lighter one Parma grey.

I like Behr Mineral. I saw it on a blog and it looked really nice. I put it in my living room and I love it. Depending the on the light, sometimes it looks more gray, sometimes more beige.

With other colors in the gold/brown/camel range I would definitely look for a warm gray. Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl is a very popular warm gray without blue undertones. BM Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray are also really popular, but they might be a little too greige for you if you want a straight gray.

Sherwin Williams has full quart samples that you can paint in a large swatch on your wall and watch how the colors react to light.  We had a grayish brown color that looked great on the sample card, but when applied to the wall, looked almost white.  So, go with samples to paint on the wall and then decide.

My next thought is that matching that shade means going with the ugly utilitarian industrial look, probably not what you want for your living room.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look at all the paint colors that were suggested. Gray is definitely a hard color to get what you want. I didn't realize that before I decided i wanted gray!

Another vote for bringing home large samples.  Colors change a lot.  That couch and the gold wall may cast colored shadows, which you can't anticipate in the store.  

 

Decent paint stores will have single color swatches that are approx the size of notebook paper with NO WHITE BORDER.  Those borders throw your eyes off when looking at chips.  I find these much easier when picking colors.  You can narrow it down to 2 or 3, and then get a sample to paint directly on the wall if you are still unsure.

I go there all the time, and I never knew this.  I made a mistake in a room and need to fix it.  Thanks for the tip!

The gray I have in my bedroom is "Carriage House" by Valspar.  It has an ever so slight brown/green tinge, but I have a lot of brown and tans in the room that is reflecting onto the wall.  It is definitely warm without having a pink tinge.  The chip online doesn't do it justice at all, it is a rich color:  http://m.valsparpaint.com/color-detail.php?id=2416&g=1018

I haven't read any of the replies here but Benjamin Moore has very nice grays. You should be able to find something you want there. They are my go-to for paint colors. Revere Pewter is nice; blanking on the others right now. I will say (ducking) that I have never been happy with any Sherwin Williams paint I've chosen. I think they all end up looking dull and "muddy." Everytime I use SW, I end up repainting...and I HATE painting.

Avoid BM Pikes Peak Gray. Painted with it twice. Love the color but definitely reads blue. Also, Behr Manhatten Mist and Pewter Mug and the associated colors on same cards read very purple.

 

Just painted with Dallas Cowboys Silver...straight up gray. Only comes in Glidden.

It could be worth getting lots of paint samples. I've painted my hall lots of different shades of whites, cream, beiges and yellows and it doesn't matter what I buy they all look primrose yellow. Something about the light in that room. I've just given up trying to get it to be the colour I want.

So, I confess I am too impatient! I didn't get samples like suggested, even though it is a great idea. I ended up getting Sherwin Williams Dovetail. In the store, the paint chip definitely has tan undertones, but it looks gray on my walls. Yay!  I am happy...I love the color! Thanks, again, for all the suggestions!
