FlyingMOm
I'd love some grammar suggestions for 6th grade. We have been using Christian Light for many years but I am overwhelmed right now and need something that is less intense. I still want solid grammar & diagramming but just LESS. I have been crossing out some and having them do partial lessons, but even that is just to much management for me right now. I'd prefer something that keeps daily lessons to 1-2 pages max. Any suggestions?
Guest
I'm not sure if IEW's Fix It Grammar would quite fit the bill, but it's fun, and it's effective in a short amount of time.
Momto6inIN
Can't say enough good things about Analytical Grammar! Your teaching time is minimal, about 10 or 15 minutes to go over the lesson and do the first few examples with them. Then they complete the rest on their own. The rest of the week is just practice with the same concept and you only have to check it with them, which takes about 5 minutes of your time each day. If you start in 6th you take 3 years to complete the program, which means you do grammar for just 10 weeks in 6th, 8 weeks in 7th, and 17 weeks for mechanics in 8th. It includes diagramming and is complete and effective. We love it! Sent from my Z988 using Tapatalk
Sahamamama2
We are using CLE LA (grammar portion only) at the rate of half a level per year, like so: 4th Grade -- 501-505 5th Grade -- 506-510 6th Grade -- 601-605 7th Grade -- 606-610 We're not up to 7th grade yet, but when we finish with 610, we plan to be done with our formal study of grammar. ;) HTH.
theelfqueen
My 6th grader is working through Painless Grammar. I picked it up at the Scholastic sale for cheap. https://www.amazon.com/Painless-Grammar-Rebecca-Elliott-Ph-D-ebook/dp/B01EI8TZC8/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484252614&sr=1-1&keywords=painless+grammar He has a solid grasp of basic grammar and this suits our needs right now. No diagramming but good coverage of the basics and humorous to boot :) Edited January 12, 2017 by theelfqueen
birchbark
Daily Grammar Practice. Five minutes a day. Pretty advanced so look at the samples before ordering.
SebastianCat
We also really like Analytical Grammar. It's designed to be a 3-year program to be done during middle school, but my kids do all 3 seasons during 7th-8th grades. Season 1, for example, has 10 weeks of work, 5 days per week, then for the remainder of the year you do just one reinforcement page every 2 weeks. You could easily slow down the pace and do 3-4 days per week, and take longer than 10 weeks, then do the reinforcement pages one per week. All of the instruction is written TO the student, so there's no teaching required, but if your child does need to hear the instruction verbally and visually, they have optional DVDs with the teaching presented. You would spend about 5 minutes per day checking/grading the work.
