After Math Mammoth 7?

My 7th grader will be finishing MM7 this spring.  I know that it is considered prealgebra and my other son was able to go into Algebra just fine after completing it.  I really don't feel like he is ready to move on to Algebra though and could really benefit from another year of prealgebra.  We've loved Math Mammoth though.  What would you recommend looking at for 8th grade?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, my dd went to Jousting Armadillos after Math Mammoth. That book is good conceptual pre-algebra, a lot will be review but if your child isn't quite ready for algebra it will help solidify things in a high interest way. There are two more books in the series that could take you through Algebra 1 (each book does not need to take an entire year).

Is your 7th grader successfully completing MM7? If so, I don't see how s/he could NOT be ready for Algebra 1. My DD12 finished it last year and has moved on to Derek Owens algebra. I find that she is very well prepared. I thought MM7 quite a rigorous pre-algebra. With that being said, we plan to do an additional year of algebra 1 just to develop mastery/solidify everything. So, I suppose it isn't that different to do two years of pre-algebra. Derek Owens has been a great fit for us; you might look at his pre-algebra.

My  son is doing the old Math Mammoth 6 this year and is also doing Jousting Armadillos and Zaccaro Challenge Math.  He's having no problem with any of the three (MM is our main program, he alternates JA and ZC as supplements).  He likes JA better than ZC because "it's a lot easier".  So, after doing MM7, your son may find JA to be very simple.  There's a lot of repetition with MM, at least so far.  I wanted to make sure pre-algebra was solid and a variety of approaches seemed to be the best way to do that.

I plan to go right into Foerster's Algebra next year, probably with Zacarro Real World Algebra and/or Problem Solving Genius.

Ditto almost exactly fourisenough, but to reiterate: our 8th grade DD did MM5-7 in 5th-7th grade. She showed her readiness with the easy-to-do Math Minutes 8 worksheets during 2016 summer. But we still had doubts about her algebra-readiness. She is a very good all-around student, although she doesn't see herself as math-strong; she's the kind of girl who, when I was in high school, never made any brain bowl teams or drew attention, but then at graduation she was the valedictorian LOL. Anyway, we took the plunge with Derek Owens algebra (her older brother had used DO for geometry and pre-calc). She has a 98 average in honors algebra, and has only one more chapter and the 2nd semester exam to go.

So - we have seen our 8th grade DD excel in a thorough algebra class (with objective non-parent grading!), after completing MM7, and with no other dedicated pre-algebra course. Hope that helps!

P.S. virtually all algebra courses begin with a review/pre-algebra module
