rose
I'm hitting a bit of a roadblock with WWS1 because we're woefully behind in grammar. My older dc are concurrently racing through R&S4. I'm planning on keeping on the R&S course for the next several years worth of material. The WWS1 copia exercises are just too difficult at this point in time. Some of this weeks were even a struggle for me because my grammar knowledge is only a couple chapters beyond theirs. Should I skip them for now and return to them later or will R&S cover some of the same material later on? Maybe I could try to find some sentence variation exercises from another source. Any thoughts or experience?
The Governess
Try Killgallon's materials.... Composing Sentences, I believe. It's a gentle intro to these types of exercises.
2_girls_mommy
Rod and Staff is a complete writing program too. So you don't have to do WWS if you are doing all of their exercises. Granted, I don't think they cover the copia exercises nor does it cover writing as thoroughly, and they definitely don't use classic materials like WWS, but it will be enough. Milknhoney
We use both WWS and R&S and we skip all of the writing exercises in R&S. Maybe that will help you keep up the pace.
redsquirrel
If you are using WWS for writing and R&S for grammar you can skip the copia...but... what if you do copia together. I mean, what if you do them and have the teacher's guide right there to guide you through the exercise. It shouldn't take very long if you do it that way. It's a good way to reinforce what has been learned in R&S. My kids have done grammar since FLL 1 and they sometimes get stuck on the copia. I have found if I do at least the first one with them, with the answers right there and we walk through it, they can get the rest done quite quickly. So, what if you did most of them as more of an instructional thing and less of a 'figure it out' lesson. And I have never used the writing in R&S, only the grammar. If you are using WWS you can certainly skip the writing exercises in R&S.

If you have read many R&S's fiction or non-fiction that is produced by people raised wholly on R&S and CLE you might think a little differently about that. I doubt many Mennonites could write a sufficient college level essay. I'm hoping to produce a higher quality result. I've been skipping almost all of the writing assignments because I find WWS to be far superior even though R&S lines up with my theology.
