Ticket to Ride Question

We just got the original Ticket to Ride, and I think that you can "add onto" routes to complete one. See photo:

My routes were Portland-Phoenix and Seattle-Los Angeles. Can't I just complete both by finishing the San Francisco to Portland segment?

My husband has already quit playing and I'm two eggnogs in...whoops.

My dh doesn't like it either... he has never won. I feel like the strategy for it is super simple. It's not always straightforward - like you have to decide when to reveal your direction, whether to take or wait, whether to play aggressively and try to block the other players' routes or conserve your trains and stick to your own routes. And some of it is luck, of course - which tickets and colors you draw. But it's weird to me that dh couldn't quite get it. He's so smart. I took pity on him and we don't really play anymore sadly.

We love Ticket to Ride! We (actually 10 y.o. DS) have three versions of the game from various Christmases. As far as entertainment goes, $50 is a good value, and the game board and pieces are good quality. It costs us that much as a family to go to a movie and get a treat for one evening.

We prefer the app to the tabletop game. :blushing: It's way too easy to bump the game and knock pieces out of place! Plus it keeps score for you. My 15 year old plays pretty frequently on his own. I believe the rules are the same as the tabletop version - and you can get the pack with all the maps!

Remember that there is a bonus for longest route - so combining routes is the best way to do that.

I've been eyeing this game for awhile. Last I looked though it was $50! Not quite ready to shell out that kind of money for a board game.

What's the best price you've seen for the game?

We got ours for $35 off amazon last summer. Honestly we love this game. We played multiple games every day over Thanksgiving break.

We have Europe, Asia & the India/Switzerland expansions. It is a great game and we bought one as a gift during Target's 30% off sale for about $30 which is an awesome price!

As an aside the Indian board has some different rule options where they do not allow you to use the same routes many times and it really changes the whole game!

You're not the only one. The app is the same and you can get all the expansions for so little. It's one of the best board game to app versions I know of. I've tried a bunch of them and it's excellent. Just like the game, but no clean up. If you have enough iPads or tablets you can just sit around and play with others as if you're really playing. Or you can play in the car or waiting for an appointment or something.

Pandemic is the only other board game to app translation that I think comes close that I've tried.

Sorry to gloat but I got this game for $2 at a yard sale. It looked like it had hardly been played before.

My daughter and I played twice today - back to back games. We are hooked! We'll try the app next. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

For the eggnog lovers in the thread, here's my favorite recipe. I made this batch three years ago - no joke. It's perfection personified at this point. Plus, you look brave/crazy when you tell your friends what you're drinking!

I had to tell you guys a fun Ticket to Ride story. My daughter's school had this awesome board game day today as a fundraiser and Alan R. Moon came! He lives in town and is friends with the woman who organized it. I asked him to sign my game board, of course. 😊 He was so, so nice. He played the Junior version with a bunch of kids and was just an all-around fun guy.

The Carcassonne app is really good too if you are looking for new options :)
