Online Classes That Teach 5 Paragraph Essay

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is where I should put her.  She already went through WWS I and did a good job with it.  We are in the middle of WWS II (taking it half speed because we don't have the time to do it full speed) and doing OK.  In theory, she knows how to write a 5 paragraph essay.  But in practice, she hands me garbage - 1 sentence paragraphs, unsupported points, no references.  I don't know what to do with this, but I am quite sure I should not be involved; hence, the outsourcing to an online class.

WTMA has a Rhetoric prep course that might work for her. You might check and see if they offer it during the summer.  But even if she took is as a sophomore she could still get two more years of Rhetoric or another writing class after that and would probably be pretty well set.

She could start in one of the shorter "workshop" classes or do a semester class starting in January. Every paper gets detailed feedback and is then revised, instead of just graded and never touched again.

My son is taking a lit class with the WriteAtHome founder, Brian Wasko, and he loves it. He's getting really valid, helpful feedback on his writing, and he's become much more motivated in terms of his level of effort in writing. I'm very pleased with the course and because of our experience DS is also now signed up for HS Comp 1 in the spring.

Wilson Hill's Honors Composition teaches it, albeit slowly and with lots of other things built in. I'm not sure I can recommend the class, though. We'll see how the rest of the year goes.

DD#1 is taking that this year & I'm going to have her reinforce it with online Bravewriter courses next year. (Not sure what we'll start with or which ones she will take, but Exp Essay 1 will definitely be on the list.)

DD#2 is taking Wilson Hill's Fundamentals of Exp. Essay this year, which I think would be a great non-Honors 9th grade course. It teaches literary analysis essays (building up to 5 paragraph stuff), literary terms, common word bungles (they're/their/there, its/it's, etc.). (I mention this for others who have younger kids coming up.) I think it is more difficult and more valuable (at this point, anyway) than Honors Comp. Might be the teacher because Mrs. Lange is phenomenal.

CLRC's Lit and Comp classes teach 5 paragraph essays. They use prompts to write a thesis connected to their reading assignments and then provide evidence -examples/quotes from the book - and explanations. In their intro class they use an outline to organize the essay and then write the actual essay step by step over several weeks. At least 2 per semester. It has been a good class for my student that is new to this type of writing. The instructor gives very detailed feedback on each step.
