What standarized testing will you use for 8th grade?

Recommended Posts

We usually use the CAT 5 or Terra Nova (CAT 6). It is easy to administer at home and gets the job done. My younger kids will still use that this year, but I plan to have my 8th grader take the ACT. I am not sure what Aspire is, but I don't foresee any problems taking the regular ACT as a homeschooler.

My dd#1 took the ITBS in 8th as I was administering it to a 6th & 3rd/4th grader at the same time (which you can do with the 4th-8th grade versions). My dd#2 will take the ITBS in the spring as an 8th grader and I will be administering the 6th grade test to a 5th/6th grader at the same time.

I also dd#1 take the ACT that fall, but dd#2 is not the same kid. (Instead of making it not-scary, it would make dd#2 feel like a dumb failure. I'll wait until 10th grade or so for the ACT for that dd.)

Of course I don't know why you want to try something different, so I'm speaking out of ignorance, but the nice thing about sticking with the same test is to better compare progress from year to year.  Additionally, the SAT 10 does not have time limits, so if you have one who hasn't tested as well as you expected, I doubt a timed test will improve things.  We have used the SAT 10 ever since I started testing my oldest a number of years ago.  My current 8th grader will take it this year, possibly for the last time.

We haven't used it, but you might consider the PSAT 8/9.

Deadline for January test is approaching. We signed up for the 6th grader through CTY.  CTY gave a voucher for the test fee.

Thanks. I'm going to keep both these suggestions in my pocket for next year. Looks like the school around me have already done it this year.

I guess I just didn't feel like it was telling me much. After seeing this comparison chart I think it's probably just fine then. http://www.setontesting.com/test-comparison-charts/ I think I'll stick with the SAT 10 then. I am suspecting stealth dyslexia with my oldest and I think the untimed test helps so much.

Where are you getting the Stanford tests from?  I'm the testing coordinator for our co-op, and BJU Press said that last year (2016--June, I think) was the last year Stanford tests would be offered, because the publisher, Pearson, wasn't going to make or support them anymore.  Has something changed?  If not, you might have to have new tests anyway!

We went ahead and used ITBS in May, and I would much rather have stuck with Stanford.  I especially liked the untimed aspect.  I think it was a lot less stressful for younger kids in particular.

I've always done it through Seton Testing http://www.setontesting.com/stanford-10-online/

It seems they were going to discontinue it at one time but not sure about that anymore. This is from BJU's website:

"Although the publisher of the Stanford 10 had previously announced that the test was being retired, we have received word that this retirement has been cancelled. The test will continue to be available until a new retirement date is set. Because of the age of the Stanford 10 and because a retirement date is uncertain, we still recommend considering The Iowa Tests®/Iowa Assessments™."

Well, what do you know?!  Ha!  I should have just stuck with Stanford last year, at least.  Instead I spent countless hours refiguring the testing schedule for all the grades for the Iowa test.

So now the big decision is, do I go back to Stanford, even though it is old and uncertain, or just stick with Iowa, which people didn't like as much because of the time limits . . . . hmmmm . . . Well, this is why I get paid the big bucks.  NOT!  Haha, I crack myself up!
