Accountability Thread: 12/4-12/10

Recommended Posts

I have something going on every day this week, except for Wednesday. I might just sleep all day on Wednesday.

Today we are going to see a play this afternoon. I need to get some writing done this morning. Because the week is so hectic we will scale back school to Math and Latin, and I picked up plenty of reading and some interesting DVDs on science and history topics for independent viewing. I will probably oversee school, get cleaning and cooking done and write. The next two weeks don't look a whole lot better, but the last week in December looks empty and perfect for planning winter term. So I'm not going to try to do much planning at all--just get done and save all that for later this month.

Critter, I hope you enjoy your play and get a little downtime this week, I would definitely sleep in on Wednesday. I think math, Latin and reading or watching documentaries is plenty for this month, we might do the same thing. Nothing major planned for us this week except going and getting results of ds' EKG, Latin, we'll probably continue reviewing fractions. We need to get the tree up and I need to the rest of the Christmas shopping done. I'll probably do our next term planning at the end of the month as well hopefully I will be doing it on a laptop. Now to decide if I'm going to try and get to church or not, I slept in a bad position last nigh and now my neck is killing me and my cough is till bothering my throats a bit.

Monday -  We are back for two weeks of full school before another break for Christmas.  Motivation is non-existent here but I cracked the whip heartily and it got done.

Algebra - Nothing was lost over Thanksgiving break.  This is good.

Logic - still easy

Lit. - We started The Hunger Games.  Despite the fact that dd chose the books we are studying this year, she is having a very bad attitude towards lit.  She will have even a worse one I expect in the coming days because the quality of her work has been slipping and this is going to stop now.

Geography - It's a four day course and she chose to take today off.

Grammar - She did ok.  She's almost to the end of this book and then we will switch gears to punctuation and mechanics.

Biology - just reading today

Japanese - She had to search her memory a bit more today for vocabulary after a week off but she did ok.  At the end, we actually did an origami helmet just for fun.

Still chugging along. We've been doing pretty well, so I haven't terribly felt the need to be accountable, but I'm starting to plan for next year. TabletClass isn't going great, so I got this No Nonsense Algebra book and DD has been working through that.

Tentatively, I think we'll do Build Your Library 9th Grade next year, since 8th is going so well this year, and a co-op/one day a week school for English, math, foreign language and maybe art. I'm starting to feel like DD isn't getting enough feedback in English, math or French, and art would just be fun.

I needed a support group this morning more than an accountability thread :-p  I tried really hard.. some stuff got done.. some stuff didn't. 'bout the usual I guess but the tantrums I have come to expect didn't happen (which was awesome!) but we had an equal number of weird tantrums from children I did not expect them from, in situations I really did NOT expect. All day was.. "Wait.. you? right now?  .. over THIS?" Highlights of the day did include an 8 year old who  managed his chores accurately, mostly independently, and most of all without a complaint. May have been the first time in his entire life. And a 4 year old who (after begging and begging me to death) had his first lesson of Miquon today and totally rocked it. It is amazing watching a baby who used to need distraction and be the distraction, turn into a school ready kiddo all on his own.

Tuesday --

St. Nicholas day here so the morning will start with sugared up kids playing with new toys.

BA, MEP, and Miquon for 3 different kids

Handwriting/spelling lessons for 2 kids

Pausing on  other LA because everyone hates everything. :( Think I will buy MCT Island for 6 & 8 year old. They are pretty evenly matched actually (6 year old in the lead) as far as readiness for that goes.

Art time

code.org and mystery science will alternate most of the day while I work with alternating kids. Those two websites are the only thing anyone wants to do around here anymore.

Read alouds and 2h goal for audio books continue

I love you guys because you always take me back after my unaccountable spells.

Drumroll: I am 95% DONE moving. I have crossed so many major hurdles and can finally see the finish line.

Our semester has suffered a tad because of the move, but it has not been a disaster. We have this week and next week to work, and then we will take two weeks off. I hope to squeeze in some Chemistry over the break, but that is probably wishful thinking.

I am beyond excited about the upcoming holidays. We have not had all three boys under one roof since May 2015, and we have not all spent Christmas together since 2013. And we are going to all be together for two weeks!!!!!!!! I am giddy at the prospect :)

Penguin- congratulations on being nearly done with your move! I'm so happy that you guys all get to spend the holidays together, what a wonderful gift!

We are not doing much today, as a matter of fact, I think after we finish a few things this week we'll begin our holiday schedule. So far we've done morning time, oldest completed his devotional for this term and I did history and literature reading with the youngest.

Today started pretty early. First up was an appointment with the cat's eye specialist--cat is doing well, but before I reorder her eye medications I wanted to be sure that they were doing the job properly.

That done, here is the rest of the day's schedule:

Lunch

Latin-quiz

Math-Lesson 6, 1 page KTD

For me: Latin, Geometry, Writing, Housekeeping, Cooking, Writers' Meeting tonight

We finished almost everything yesterday.I didn't get to my geometry, and I only got 1500 for my word count. But the boys got all their work finished, and I got some cooking and much needed cleaning accomplished, so not bad.

Today's schedule:

Latin-Start Unit 1 Review

Math-Lesson 7, 1 page KTD

For me: Latin, Geometry, Writing, Cooking, Housekeeping

Wed. - the second day of health stuff in the Big City for me in a row.  (Nothing wrong - it's just what my doctors do to keep me on a short leash and to monitor me.)  Having to get up extra early two days in a row to drive an hour into the Big City has done me in.  I'm headed for a crash in my armchair this afternoon as soon as I get back from delivering ds to work.  I'm planning on the teriyaki place for dinner - no cooking.

Dd has done Algebra.

She will not do Biology today because this chapter is a short one that can be done in 4 days.  She opted to take today off.

She plans to:

do World Geography.  I think she can do this without any input from me.

Logic - ditto

Grammar - she will probably need my help.  We'll see how we can manage that.

Lit. - hopefully she can do this without me.  I haven't glanced at it but its the start of a new book and the assignments tend to be easier at the start.

Japanese - she had prepared some Quizlet "tests" for today that will suffice as our lesson.

I think this will be doable.  I feel better having typed this out.

Today was a drain, we got the echo EKG results and the good news is that his fainting episode was not due to his heart, in other news, he does have a small hole in his heart and they are going to monitor it. The youngest got his duo lingo Spanish and German done, his math and music practice done. The older only did his literature reading done so, he may do a math lesson this weekend.

I came here on Tuesday and caught up on what everyone is up to this week. (Welcome back Aurelia and Penguin.) I came back Wednesday and realized I didn't "like" any of the posts. So I did that and typed out 2 sentences of my own post. Then had to attend to the kids or something and never made it back here. Started a new post this morning. Got 3 sentences typed before there was a toddler disaster and the day had to keep going.

Now I'm sitting in the car in my driveway while the toddler sleeps because he fell asleep on the way home and if I take him out, he'll wake up and be a bear the rest of the day. At least I get wifi in the driveway!

So let's see if I can remember what we've been up to this week...

Monday: we did our full school work load. I made a few phone calls, dd practiced piano, I did a few chores. Caught up on tons of laundry. Nothing major.

Tuesday: ds' allergy shots, library, and groceries a day early to beat the bitter cold that was coming. School work in the afternoon. Harder to get through it but we did! Piano practice. Cleaned out the car, prepped for outside activities and accomplished those. Home, late night snack, and lights out.

Wednesday: light school morning. Just reading, language arts and math. Then I cleaned both bathrooms, dusted and vacuumed the entry, living room, and boys' bedroom. Cleaned the kitchen. Dd got picked up by a friend for her piano lesson and dh, the boys, and I had guests over. Sort of a mentor/consultation/counsel thing. Hard to describe without giving out personal details. Dd was returned safe and sound just before the snow hit! The kids spent most of the evening looking out the windows at the first snow of the season! I made soup and bread for dinner and the kids did some snowy crafts.

Today (Thursday): Left the house early for a 9am meeting. Then another meeting back to back at 9:30. Picked up dh and the kids and took the kids to the sitter then dh and I went to the Dr. (again) Home now. The kids are playing. I'm sure dh is sleeping. I'll have dd do math and practice piano when the toddler wakes up and I can go inside! Lol! Family Bible time tonight. I think we've got a video lined up to watch.

Tomorrow (Friday): ds allergy injections, regular school work load, early dinner because dh has a meeting in the evening.

I think that does it for us this week. I feel like I'm doing the things because my planner is telling me to, not because I'm particularly pleased or even content to be doing them. I think that means I need a vacation. Not just a break from homeschooling, but a real go-to-a-warm-beach vacation. Not happening but, man, I wish it was.

Critterfixer - how do you get so much of your own work done? I am so envious watching you.

I must be a ridiculous over planner or un-accomplish-er. We almost never ever get everything done even though I am really happy with our progress and the balance of our days (mostly). So, not everything got done today but the kids had a good day and I didn't shake any of them.

Tomorrow is not a real school day because I signed the kids up for an art "field trip" sort of thing with their charter school. It's pretty far away so it will take the whole morning and then DH is taking the bigger two skiing so they have a day on the snow before their programs start on Saturday.

I don't always get all of my own work done. I get what I can get done and I'm usually happy with that. I try to always schedule less than what I think we can do. Usually that's about right.

I worked today. Did not get to Latin, but finished a library book that I wanted to read. I also got my book on watercoloring today. Very beautiful and inspiring. I sketched a picture of a character in between doing other things. The boys were at their grandparents while I worked and did their Latin and Math for the day.

Tomorrow I work again, and then I'm going to take a nap. Then I have to get up and plan a little bit of school for next week. I've a feeling we'll have a light week upcoming as well.

Update:  We did get a bit of work done today, we just did it from the couch.  The youngest got his music practice, morning time, and a verbal math lesson done.  The oldest only got to his literature reading again.  Critter, i'll be joining you in a little bit of planning this weekend and we'll also be having a lite week next week.  I'm going to try to get to at least four lessons in all of our work and then we'll go even lighter over our break mostly just doing art and oral lessons.

Hello everyone.  I really wish I could figure out how to get on here on a daily basis, but alas, it doesn't seem to be right now.   Penguin, I'm right there with you .  Despit best intentions, I have spells where I'm completely MIA.  Good news about that is that I'm probably just off doing what I should be doing, rather than just reading and writing about it lol!

I'm scratching my head over my children over here.  Oldest is such a grump I don't even like working with her half the time, but at least she can do 75% of her stuff on her own.  Her other parents and I have been making noises about private school next fall . . . which I'm not sure I really want since I predict getting her on the bus by 700 am and doing homework in the evening will be just as much of an ordeal as trying to work through something hard at home.  And I like homeschooling!  But it may preserve a bit of relationship, that's for sure.

Actually, my second kid is rolling along really nicely, progressing everywhere very well.  He was a late reader (perhaps mildly dyslexic?) and I can see the same kind of time will be necessary with writing.  But he devours audiobooks (thank goodness for a great library system!) so I'm fairly confident that once he gets the mechanics of writing under his belt, he written work will be much more fluent.  He has a lot to say!

My third.  Man.  He's such a puzzle!  I asked the General Education board for advice on perhaps skipping Literature as a part of "school" and just doing science type reading.  I'm also thinking I'm going to continue with AAS with him, at least until we finish level 2 or 3.  I only stopped last year because he was going to outpace his two older siblings and he was only in grade 1 anyhow.  He's just about done this year's math.  Only a few chapters left. . . that's including supplements with LOF, Logic Safari and Challenging Word Problems.  All of which he does on his own.  The only reason I worry about him is because I worry he's not being challenged, that he's not learning to work hard for what he wants.

I'm sorry.  I don't know why I write this here.  This is sort of like a year in review so far, rather than accountability.
