What games are you giving this holiday season?

To a great-nephew, aged nine:  Sushi Go! - The Pick and Pass Card Game

To my husband: Quarto (Travel Version).  (We have the full sized version, but this will be more convenient when he takes it to tutoring appointments.)

To my sister and brother-in-law:  ?? (Still working on this.  I'd planned to give them Love Letter but gave it to them on an October visit.)

What games do you hope to receive?

I have a couple of games on my wish list:

Morels

The Game Card Game

Please share what games you're giving and hope to receive.

Regards,

Kareni

For a family gift game: Bring Your Own Book; http://tinyurl.com/zcsqvkx

For my college freshman: Bards Dispense Profanity; http://tinyurl.com/gvup5gc

For my high school junior: Cat Stax (cats! that stack!); http://tinyurl.com/z9laboa

For a 12-yr-old zoo volunteer: Mysterious Creatures; http://tinyurl.com/h8hohso

Five minutes ago, I would have said I wasn't hoping to receive any games, but when I got the url for Cat Stax it suggested Cat Sequence, and omigosh, cats!!

My son recently contacted me about preordering the game Tak by James Earnest and Patrick Rothfuss for his Dad. He should have known that his father Kickstarted the game. While this one is not yet in stores, I will mention it for folks who are fans of The Name of the Wind, the Rothfuss novel.

By the way, Sushi Go is a fun family game. And whenever this topic comes up, I like to mention the card game Sleeping Queens that was created by a formerly home schooled girl who is now a college student.

My kids have already been given (exchanged with cousins over Thanksgiving) Qwirkle, Dragonwood, and Codenames Pictures. We gave my 5-year-old nephew Rivers, Roads, and Rail. My niece we have Spot It Jr. I'm planning to get my sister Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert.

They are also getting Suspicion, Apples to Apples Jr, and Brain Games.

I'm hoping to get Ticket to Ride Europe (we have the USA I've one already). I also added Sheriff of Nottingham to my wish list after another post here and just added Sleeping Queens to my boys' list.

We love games, have tons and are always looking for new ones so I love these game posts! I feel like I see the same games over and over in stores. I need fresh ideas!

My sister is getting Dd Life and thanks to reading this thread Dd will get Sushi Go and I am getting great niece Spot It.

As a suggestion my Dd got game called "Clue Master" She really liked it, mastered it and we are giving it to grandpa because he likes puzzles. Also, Target has some STEM games on sale this week.

A favorite when my son was younger!

My husband is the serious gamer of this household.  He recommends Kill Doctor Lucky as a good group game, age 12+.  Who doesn't want to kill Dr. Lucky with a runcible spoon? Bonus:  Kill Doctor Lucky is made in the US with all US parts. (Wooden pawns made in Maine.)

DS8 is getting Kingdom Builder, and he also has King of Tokyo and some Star Wars game on his list.

DS7 is in a "I hate games unless I'm stomping everyone" phase, so Pie Face is the only one on his list. Fun enough to not care if he loses. He's even finding ways to get upset at cooperative games. Le sigh.

DS3 has Zingo on his list. We already have so many games he can play that it's getting tough to find things for him.

I asked for Imploding Kittens and some other expansions for games we already have (Ticket to Ride, Castle Panic).

DH has Tsuro, Zombie Dice, Legendary, and Catan on his list.

I don't buy games that I don't want to play myself, so they are all secretly gifts to me!

Right now our gift closet is holding:

Concept

Robo Rally

Flash Point Fire Rescue

Doodle Quest

Kitty Paw

Taboo

Zooloretto

Rhino Hero

A few of these will be reserved for birthdays.

My kids love Scribblish but we are almost out of paper.  I can't buy more pads, so I am planning on making a big stack of refills to put in their stockings.

What I'd really like is some Dominion expansion sets, but no one here wants to play it with me <_< I'm keeping my eye out for cheap Smash Up, Story Cubes, and Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures expansions, too.

Pandemic for my 14 year old. (And SkyRim but I don't think you meant that kind of game.)

Hoping for Qwirkle at least for the kids. Made the mistake of giving MIL my whole list of game wishes and now have no clue if/what she will actually buy them! If she doesn't they will be getting some post Christmas games from us! :)

Oh, this is a great thread! I want to get at least a couple of family games, one that the older people will enjoy, and one that we can include the smallboys in as well. Now I have lots of good ideas to check out!

Had I not bought Ticket to Ride PA for my iDevices already, I'd have gotten that one. But I've played it and the USA version on my own enough (thank you, pregnancy insomnia) that it's not really a fair one to play with the kids. Maybe T2R Rails to Sails. They liked Nordic a couple of years ago.

We got pandemic as a family gift since we all play games together. I just got DH a dominion expansion for his bday but since my boys are starting to learn how to play we may grab another. They've also been asking for ticket to ride Europe but since I'm assuming it's the same as USA but Europe I'm holding off. I want something new.

I'm contemplating tsuro too since that's one even our youngest can play with us

Ooh, this one is looking good for my brother-in-law.  (Well, really for my sister, but I can give it to him and she gets the benefit!)

This does look good.  I'll admit to having a fondness for well made wooden games.  I think that's one reason why I like Quarto; besides being a wonderful game, it has good eye and hand appeal.

My wishlist and my kids' wishlist keeps getting longer thanks to all these game threads!

You are welcome!

Kareni

Europe isn't the same as US, there are a few different rules and train route configurations that make the game different (and more fun IMO). I'm sure Dice Tower reviews has a YouTube video going through it if you want specifics!

I know I am getting the Prosperity expansion for Dominion and we bought ourselves Sheriff of Nottingham and Blokus during the 30% off sale at Target. We've had a lot of fun playing SoN with our 7 and 5 year olds.

DH is getting a Catan expansion and Puerto Rico as well as No Thanks.

We bought Ticket to Ride First Journey for our kids.

Instead of Sushi Go, I'd pay a bit more and get the expanded Sushi Go Party.

What I want to do this year is focus on having a few more two-person games. Any suggestions? It'll have to wait for my birthday, but I can pick them out now, anyway :)

I'm totally getting that Cat Stax game! Now I just have to figure out if I should give it to DD, who will love the cats more, or DS12, who will love the puzzle aspect more.

If you're looking for a two person game that requires thinking and strategizing, I'd recommend Quarto.

If you're looking for something that is fun but doesn't require much brain oomph (how's that for a technical term?), I'd suggest Love Letter.  It's a great game for two players that can also be played with three or four.

I always enjoy Games Magazine list of favorite games of the year.  They used to list 100, but in more recent years, the list has been pared down to only a few.  Here's a link where you can see this year's choices.  The list includes the categories Traditional Game of the Year, Family Game of the Year, Card Game of the Year, Party Game of the Year, and Strategy Game of the Year.  Runners up are also listed. There are also links there to lists from prior years.

I also felt like we needed more two player games about a year or two ago. Some we've added since then...

7 Wonders Duel (this game is soooo good - I feel like I like it better than the original - and the fact that it's for 2 players specifically is good for our household)

Jaipur

Loot Letter (same as Love Letter, just different theme - can be played in a group, but we like it as a two player game)

Splendor (for a group too, but we like it best as a two player game)

Netrunner (this is a more elaborate game with expansions and so forth... one of my kids - the one who's really into D&D and MTG - really likes it - I feel like I need to play it more to really get it)

Concept (this is a group game, but we kind of like it as a quickie for two players)

Oh, and the only game the kids are getting so far is the Exploding Kittens expansion.

I might just go crazy and get all expansions. We want the Machi Koro expansions and I think getting a Dominion expansion might re-invigorate our Dominion playing (though will it let me ever win that game again? The kids have really figured it out and I cannot seem to beat them). Maybe we need a new Dix It deck too, though that would mean we have an insane number of Dix It cards.

Don't get Dominion! It's become an expensive obsession at our house! We've collected all of the expansions. Then we needed a fancy box to put them all together in and then we needed it on iPad for times when no one else had time to play so that we could play solo. It's best with red wine and good friends! Beware!!! Just teasing you. Totally worth every penny. My favorite expansion is Adventures.

I've been checking out so many of these suggestions, and I'm down to these options that the adults, 14yo, 11yo, and maybe 8yo might like:

Codenames

Sheriff of Nottingham

Dragonwood

And for things that the little ones (3, 5, and maybe 8) might enjoy as well:

Qwirkle

Sushi Go

Anyone have any thoughts for me there?

Tenzi (well, I bought the Tenzi cards and bought dice via ebay because I needed several sets, and it was cheaper that way) was a good hit last year for a small game.

A game you might consider for the older group is Fluxx which comes in a variety of incarnations

such as

Pirate Fluxx

Star Fluxx

SET: The Family Game of Visual Perception is a game I'd recommend for ages eight and up.

For the youngest player, I'll suggest  Ravensburger Snail's Pace Race.

What's nice about this game is that it is the snails that win or lose, not the children.

This looks fun. I'm considering it for my parents. My mom actually quilts and they Iike to play games together. Their favorite is rummikub and I'm pretty sure they play it nearly daily. They also like hand and foot and dominoes.

What do you think? I read a bunch of reviews and I'm trying to decide if they will like it.

Well...I was reading this thread and checking out some of the suggestions on Amazon. Lucky for me, I checked my super secret hiding place and found 2 brand new games -- Dominion and 7 Wonders -- LOL. Good thing I didn't click the buy button :-).

One of my boys wants 2 more of the Ticket to Ride games -- Nordic and Pennsylvania.

My kids are all buying board games for each other. On the list are Dominion, Escape Room the Game, and a Munchkin expansion called Munchkin Kittens. They also gave one grandma games as their lists, mostly different Munchkin versions.

They're also getting assorted video games from us.

In another recent thread, someone mentioned a game that used a lot of elementary math....I told myself to make a note of the game, but of course, I didn't. Does anyone know what it might have been?

Was it Sleeping Queens? Clumsy Thief is cute too for adding sets to 100.

I guess this would count as a "game"... for my birthday this year (June), my friend gave me a subscription the The Mystery Experiences Company.

Our teen sons do a game night a couple of nights a month (D&D), so friend, her dh, sometimes her dd, & I do our own mystery-solving game night with the boxes I get. She just renewed my subscription, so we're set to go for at least a few more months. It has been a lot of fun.

From their website:

Each month you will receive a new mystery experience that tells a compelling story and offers a mystery to solve: murders, lost relics, serial killers, forbidden secrets and much more!  Each mystery experience is designed to both tell a story and offer a mystery for you to solve.

Receive a  mysterious package in the mail.  Use the objects, clues and puzzles inside to solve a compelling mystery.  Past mysteries have included maps, cryptic letters, encrypted flash drives, forensic evidence, newspapers, cremated human remains, antique keys, artwork, journals, photographs, FBI profiles, and much, much more!

The kids (8 & 4) are getting:

Cauldron Quest

Enchanted Forest

Bugs in the Kitchen

DH and I are getting Kingdom Builder

I'm thinking of getting another adult game. Or one DD8 can play with us. She mostly loves being able to play with her little sister, but she enjoys the few 8/10 and up games we have.

Any suggestions similar in difficulty to Forbidden Island? That's her favorite. We have Forbidden Desert.

No one else we buy for is into games. Sadly. We need more game partners!

My Forbidden Island/Desert loving son (he's 7) also loves Scotland Yard, Dragonwood (he got this for Thanksgiving and we've played it a million times already), Ticket to Ride, Machi Koro,CLUE, Labyrinth and Catan Jr (we don't own the full version so I don't know the difference).
