If you're familiar with Heart of Dakota's CTC...

I'd like to decide soon what we'll use for next school year (for history and lit at least) so I can pre-read stuff in the spring and have the summer OFF.  I love the look of HOD!  I think I will definitely use it for my younger kids.  My oldest (will be 11--6th grade) places nicely into CTC.  We have been doing (and loving) American history since 1st grade!  We both  are ready for a change!  I like lots of things about CTC (The poetry!  The books!  DITHOR!).  However, I feel like I will need to add something to cover non-biblical history during that period.  Has anyone added SOTW 1 or something similar?  Maybe on the 5th day?  I would really love to make this program work for him!

I've used HOD's CTC and SOTW but not at the same time. I think it's a great idea to use SOTW on the fifth day.  My only caution would be that CTC and SOTW are quite thorough so it would be a lot of history for your ds to take in each week but if it works for him then it would make for a fuller year.

We didn't like the books in CTC ... just quickly glancing at the economy package on their website, I can recognise five that didn't work for us! But you said you like the books so that may not be an issue for you. The student notebook is fantastic and was the highlight of our year.

I know you were asking about CTC but would you consider doing Preparing with extensions with your ds? Preparing gives a great overview of history and I personally wouldn't want to miss it. HTH

We liked the science part of this guide.  We struggled through some of the history books and notebooking assignments....they just didn't fit for us.  We enjoyed the drawing and the What in the World CD and many of the read alouds.  We just never really could get into the history books.

I would love to do Preparing since we haven't done any world history, but it looks too easy skill-wise for him now. I'm guessing it would be a really bad fit 8 months from now...  I really want something that I don't have to tweak too much for next year to make it work.

ah yes, I see what you mean .... and I completely understand the desire to have a option that doesn't need a lot of tweaking!

I've had three kids go through CTC so far.  I think it really depends on your child whether you'll want to add anything to the schedule.  I think that going through SOTW would be great if you can fit in the time.  I've had two kids who would have been able to complete all of the CTC work and add in SOTW without any trouble but then I had one child who would have struggled with adding any additional work.  Maybe you can try it and see how it goes.  Or, another idea, use the audio CD's and listen to SOTW in the car or at some other time.

We've added in both Latin and Greek to CTC with no problems, so in our experience there is room for some "add-ons" in that guide.  I do think there will be some duplication of material.  I've not used all of SOTW but have used the first third or so and can think of several chapters that over-lap with information presented in other ways in the CTC guide so you may be able to pick and choose as you go through SOTW.

By the way, I'd also vote for doing Preparing with extensions.  Preparing is my favorite HOD guide.
