vonfirmath
My son received an invitation for the DUKE TIP program for "4th-6th graders" Has anyone participated in this? It seems like a one time cost and that is all, which we could do. Is it worth it? My son was recently tested at a "10th grade reading level" (though he by no means functions at a 10th grade level. Even in taking notes for projects, etc. So I'm not sure what that means)
Arcadia
The reading level thing just unofficially mean the child can read a high school textbook comfortably. My kids participated in Duke TIP because we weren't sure if kids wanted to do the summer camps. Turns out my kids weren't interested. One of my boys did like the TIP book club which is free. The TIP have more online classes out now. We like CTY a lot more because they have some activities and summer camps in the west coast. Also their online course offerings are a lot more though pricy. If you are near the area where Duke TIP has onsite programs, then it might be worth it to join.
Pawz4me
Oldest DS joined Duke's TIP when he was a rising fifth grader (note he's 21 now, so it was a long time ago). He participated in a couple of classes (on campus) but didn't find the choices all that interesting. But like I said -- a long time ago. It's likely the program has changed. Lilaclady
I will say hold off until 7th grade unless he wants to take the classes. You can look up the classes / camps and see if they are ones he will like and that you want to pay for. For us, they were too expensive and not worth it. You have to rejoin in 7th grade so it is better to join then.
Dmmetler
My primary reason for doing Talent search in elementary was to access the EXPLORE, which was an acceptable end of year test while simultaneously giving me more information, since the ceiling was higher. We never used any of the elementary programs. We may use the camps in the future, so I did send her scores in for that purpose, once she'd done the ACT. Wondering what if... I don't want that to happen to my son). This is the first I was aware there was a program for younger. Thanks!
