Possibly silly question re grade level

And I seem to remember this has been discussed before, but I can't locate it...

If you had a child who is working on the grade 5 math book, is currently in grade 3 home school, but would be in grade 2 if she were still attending school, which grade level would you select when she is entering a math competition?

My DS11 meets the Dec 2nd cutoff for K and is always entered as whatever grade he would be in public school regardless of his public charter school official math acceleration because that is what I was told to do when I ask what category he should be in for local math contests.

My DS10 miss the cutoff by a few days and we request the public charter for a grade skip when he was in 2nd. So he officially skipped 3rd grade since the approval came at the end of 2nd grade. In DS10's case, he participated as a old 2nd grader one year, and a young 4th grader the next year but he never participated as a 3rd grader.

In your case, is your 3rd grader officially grade skip? If she is not, I would go with 2nd grade because some contests have a grade level ceiling e.g. the mathnasium trimathlon ends at 5th grade or grade level grouping e.g. the ICAS Australia (UNSW) awards https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/paper-to-year-level-equivalent-table

Age or grade of school registration overall, usually, but check rules. The US National Spelling bee has restrictions on the number of high school or college classes a kid can take and still be eligible (for a competition where the top grade level is 8th). We have also chosen to bump DD in some of the more "exam" type competitions beyond grade level for challenge reasons-competitions where the only consequence to doing better is that you get a medal vs a certificate are a good place for that :).

An argument can easily be made for listing grade 2 or grade 3.

I would list as grade 3 if that is an official designation through paperwork or charter school, just the same as a child who skipped a grade in public school would be registering for their actual grade. If that is a completely unofficial designation, then I would list grade 2.
