provenance61
I didn't rush our son through math and science. He's gifted but 2E and needs more time with working problems. (Actually it's interesting because some computation takes longer, especially with steps -- yet he flew through pre-algebra mostly working through book by himself.) He is interested in possibly going into engineering or science. We'd like to start him now in algebra, but are hesitant to decide whether to go with honors or regular algebra. How do you decide? And what are the options for online? We are considering Calvert but they really don't give details other than honors algebra moves a bit faster and gets into some algebra 2 concepts at end of year. Any other options? We want something solid. Edited November 16, 2016 by provenance61
Lanny
You are correct to want something "solid". Algebra 1 is the base for everything that follows. Take it low and slow and get a solid foundation for him. Edited November 16, 2016 by Lanny
kiana
Can you transfer down if it's too much? I'd ask about that, because my inclination would be to start in honors, and if it's too much transfer to non-honors. AliR
DD has not long finished Algebra 1 honors with Calvert, if there are any particular questions that you have.
Hilltopmom
Derek Owens is online, & offers both options. You can email him & he'll help you decide, but I think you can try honors then change if need be ( his honors just includes extra more difficult problems & longer tests on top of the regular option, not a separate program). We've been very pleased (ds is doing DO AG 2 this year, not honors, but in retrospect, should have).
