more Barton questions

My 10 YO passed the post-tests for levels 1 & 2.  I haven't given her 3 yet.  I don't think she will have any trouble with the reading parts, but spelling will probably trip her up.  I'm not sure it's worth spending the time Barton would require for her to do it primarily to improve her spelling.  She still needs some work on reading but reads above grade level and improved a great deal with Rewards + nonsense words.  I think some more work with nonsense words and multi-syllable word practice is all she needs for reading.  Thoughts?  Worth doing Barton 3 & 4 at least with her if I have it?  I only have so much time and ambition...

7 YO passed all of the post-test for level 1 except the rhyming part.  He forgets rhyming if he hasn't done it for a while.  It took him about 3 minutes to remember how to rhyme, which was long enough to flunk that section of the post-test.  Now that he's remembered how to do it, he rhymes just fine.  I'm debating about whether it's worth getting level 1 for him.  Would you consider that a fail?

6 YO finally passed the Barton pre-screen.  If I get Barton 1 I will put him through it but I don't know if he actually needs it.  Abecedarian was thorough enough for the others to pass level 1, so I think it would be for him too once we get far enough through it.  I still don't know if he's dyslexic.  He has fewer early signs than either of the others.  He still doesn't really get rhyming though, and I feel like it takes him more repetitions than it should to remember a word after reading it repeatedly.  But we've only been doing reading lessons for 5 weeks, 4 days a week, about 10 minutes a day.  We're using Abecedarian and the first set of I See Sam readers.  And writing...I guess this is normal for K but he reverses a lot and starts most letters at the bottom and on the right instead of the left.  He's using HWOT K for handwriting instruction.

Honestly, I would call Barton and talk it through with her.  She's in CA, so you can call pretty late (depending on where you live) and still get her.  She was incredibly helpful to me.

In general, it sounds like you need to keep doing post-tests and work through it.  There are lots of ways to work on spelling, and lots of kids with ADHD and no SLD have wicked problems with spelling.  Developmental vision problems can also cause problems with spelling.  So no, I would not buy Barton if you don't need it.  But you haven't maxed out the post-tests.  I would see where they put you for each dc and talk it through with Barton.

I think that's *odd* for a dc to forget rhyming.  There's clearly a weakness there.  If you can get a practitioner to run the CTOPP, you can get a more complete picture of his phonological processing. The Barton tests are not meant to diagnose or exclude dyslexia.  On the 6 and 7 yos, I would get a CTOPP run.  An SLP or reading tutor or the ps can do it.
